I'll correct you on this one, there's no way the whole ice cap could melt so suddenly, the truth is only that a long crack in the ice appeared over the north pole.

Actually water is one of few substances which are denser in liquid than in solid form. However, because of that about 10% of the polar ice cap mass is above sea level. So if it all melts, those two things are going to more or less compensate each other. But a real problem is ice from Antarctica, which is high above sea level and is resting on rocky surface. If that melts, the water level will rise. Also add to that all the ice in the northern hemisphere that is resting on solid surface above sea level.
