What you really need is some offsite backups ...

(picture me looking up prices on 200Gb harddisks)

we have win98 on this pc, no problems with it really, although after 4 years or something this hard drive might need a format to clean it up hehe. we tried defragging a couple of times, left it overnight, when we checked it the next morning it was at 1%... its only like 10gigs anyway! i want to buy a 120 gig hard drive as soon as i can afford it. hehe which translates to maybe next christmas or something

Dood.. you should have backed up... and try to get the data recovered... you might be able to ... but apart from that.. tsk tsk tsk..

I learnt my lesson back in 99 when i lost 30 mp3s in one hit.. tsk tsk tsk.. never again my friend...

Well Philby DON'T buy a 120Gig HDD before checking few things! Your Mobo (motherboard) may not be compatable with larger HDD's by BIOS. If its a well known brand and providing that it's not older than 4-5 yrs eg: Gigabyte, Asus, MSI, AOpen, Abit. you can download a BIOS update and flash your Mobo and if you lucky that will bring your BIOS up2date to accept latest HDDs (50/60% chance)

Secondly; Defrag is a problem with Win98 under normal operating conditions IT WON'T Defrag even if you wait for 10 days coz some background running program will interrupt the process and defrag will start from 0 each time!!!

Here's the way around: Boot your PC in safe mode by keep pressing F8 after switch ON which will give you an options menu in MS-DOS screen halfway boot. I'm sure u have seen that menu many times after a CRASH. Select SAFE MODE boot and do the DEFRAG in safemode. You will see it'll be done in a breeze depending how full and how big is your HDD.

Not true... trick of the trade is to shove it to Safe Mode THEN do a defrag.. can't be fucked... get a defrag proggie off the net.. you can find freeware ones... thats what i do...
