| quote: | | Dude, wheres my car? Can you relax for a sec. Look at a site like Mp3.com, do you think mp3.com would do 1/100th the business or success if it was called TranceMp3.com, RapMp3.com , RockMp3.com? Trance is not the only topic or type of music that is discussed here, All types of Electronica is, so it only make sense for benefit of this site and its patrons that it be called what it truly is, an Electronica Dance Music Forum. Im a bit of a economics and market research guy so I guess I see things on the macro level...you seem like a traditionalist and thats fine...but there's nothing wrong with Change dude...o yah and some new colors would be kool for the site haha. |
This is a site for people who like trance music. Of course most of those people like some other sorts of music, and sometimes other sorts of music are discussed. However, we still know that everyone's top genre or at least very near the top is trance. By commercializing this site and introducing other kinds of music, the forums would get very diffused by people who don't like trance and by topics which aren't about trance. Tranceaddict is a community which is connected by people's love for trance. If you would bring other sorts of music here, the only common thing here that binds us all would be lost. You would first experience a drastic fall in interest of many tranceaddicts who visit this forum, me included. The new members wouldn't be so hooked, so the number of visits to this site would fall dramatically, and you would have two solutions. Either coming back to what was and wait for a long time to rebuild the old stuff, or going even more commercial to attract new masses. The second one is obviously a better way from your point of view, so you'd get a general music discussion forum. Most of tranceaddict community would either disperse, or a new site would be created where we could all meet again.
Commercialization is only good for making profit. Pop fans don't have any sort of community, and pop singers are in it just for money. Cheesy trance artists are out there just because they share your philosophy. It seemed to them that they will make more money by producing cheesier music for the larger masses, but I really doubt that Ian van Dahl is earning more money than Tiesto. And I am absolutely sure that his fans are nowhere near as supportive for him as Tiesto's are.
How would this site profit from commercialization? It is not selling anything, on the contrary, it is freely distributing mp3 music and videos, and that is against the law. So you'd have only forums left, because other sections of the site would have to be closed to insure no legal action will be taken against the site. Maybe swamper would get more profit from the sponsors because of more clicks on the site. But that is also very questionable. A successful transformation from a trance-community+mp3 sharing+music videos site into a popular music discussion forum is a very questionable not only from a financial point of view. Not to mention that there is a bigger issue here, and that is everyone on this site loves trance and I think you are pretty much alone in wanting to expand this site into supporting other forms of music. Although big sites and forums are diverse and are covering most of the subjects, smaller one-subject oriented sites still exist and will always exist, because whenever a site like this turns into a site that covers more subjects in a less in-depth way, a need for a new such site arises, which attracts the same people that were on the previous one. Basically the transformation wouldn't do anyone a favour.
P.S. And I like the colors, I think they're really nice and topic-related in a sort of way. I suppose you'd also want them in a more popular public-oriented way?
P.P.S. I don't like the look of the trancesystem site.
