Hey Patticus,

I agree with you and I find your reply interesting, but I think the problem here lies in our definition of the word "trance." I think these two groups of DJ's spin completely different kinds of music. One of them is trance, perhaps, or the other, but not both.

Now, I've seen "trance" as a genre defined like this: Fast-paced, lush, 4/4-rhythm, with prominent synths.

You may say that this describes Trance Anthems, and not all of trance. But doesn't it aptly describe the vast majority of modern trance tunes? I've been downloading lots of trance MP3s for the last several months, and almost all of them fit that description, and are completely unlike Oakenfold's or Sasha's repertoire.

I think here we have a clash of terminology. Many places and services like amazon.com put Tiesto and Sasha into the same "Trance" category, and I think this is wrong. Maybe a new concept like "Trance-Pop" should be introduced.

BTW: If you ask me, I don't think that "trance" is a good term for the definition above, I think "Dance" is. Armin, Tiesto, and Ferry play music that's closer to Dance, whereas the term "Trance" as we know it from literature is better-suited for Oakenfold's dreamy, hazy, brooding style.

hmmm i think this genre labelling will always be disputable..
but yea i'd still label ferry and armin and tiesto as trance. just different type of trance
its hard to put someone in a distinct genre
if u literise 'trance' as oakenfold dreamy trance
then u can also say that the original trance of goa.. is the TRUE trance..
but thats not the case as we know it..
differnt perceptions exist....

I prefer the other group: Armin, Tiesto, and Ferry.

Does anyone agree with this distinction?

I agree 110%
except about Oakenfold...Oakenfold does fast and slow, but Digweed and Sasha are too slow and that is a turnoff.

My favorite DJ's include paul van dyk and tiesto....

Exactly right. And doesn't goa pre-date trance?
In fact in the early days the term "trance" reflected very well this transcendental slow music.

Think back to Oakenfold's 1998 Tranceport, that was 3 years ago, and "trance" is a very good way to describe that album.

But then the Anthem Revolution of 1999/2000 changed the genre completely, the music got a harder edge and became more danceable. Yet the term stuck on.

I call this "The Paradox of Trance"

Thumbs up

In my opinion, John Digweed is one of the top 3 Trance DJ's in the world. His musical selections are contantly fresh and uplifting. His mixing flows flawlessly.

well, where to start???

first off, please don't mention Jokenfold in the same sentence as sasha and digweed. He does not even come CLOSE to comparing to either of them. i don't want to start an oakenfold love/hate war, but if you think he is anywhere near as talented as s&d then it simply highlights you complete lack of knowledge when it comes to a dj's skill level. (i won't even comment on tiesto, ferry corsten,ect..)

second, yes digweed is fantastic! the man is a genius. his hong kong and la gu's are some of my favorite cds. his mixing is second only to that of sasha's (which he has said many times himself), and his style is always years ahead of the field. while some may not like his cd's cause they are "too slow", i find they take you on a ride no tiesto cd ever will.

sasha plays deep progressive trance people! when he and digweed get together it's a different story. but when he plays on his own, his sets are very trancy...just not CHEESE. (i won't mention examples of cheese). his track selection is the best of any dj, and his mixing is UNREAL.

/end rant

let one thing be clear:
many, actually MOST of the people on this forum are uplifting/epic trance lovers.. fast, energetic type (AvB, Ferry Corsten..)
So they will find stuff by Diggers, Sasha, Darren Emerson, Dave Seaman and Nick Warren pretty "slow" as many called it so far.

Its just a different style.. these guys play mostly Progressive and Tribal/Tech House.
If you are not into this style, then there is no way ever that u will get to like stuff by these artists.

However, if u DO like it, just like I do, then you will find that out of them all, Digweed tends to bring u a fresh selection, of great quality, and amazing mixing skills.
He has been the best at it for the last 2 years along with Sasha, but recently Dave Seaman has been givin them a headache.. he's rising too high nowadays.

Personally I find Trance boring. Too repetitive. Prog Trance is much better and yet, my personal taste, Tribal/Tech House is the best, which is the style preferred by Sasha and Diggers.

just my thoughts on this.. don't diss these guys unless u like their music. coz otherwise like stated before u will find it "slow" or "boring" blah blah

laterz..

too slow...hrm

well he might seem "too slow" but digweed is mainly a club dj. what do you hear at clubs, wait let's make that "adult" clubs? you hear progressive house/trance. That is digweed's style, I never hear about him spinning at a "party". He might, but the style of party also depends.

He has skill, he has selection, but unless i'm in the club he's spinning at leave me at home listening to some avb, tiesto, corsten, etc.

Music is very odd at times, tiesto can get me energetic or put me to sleep, depends on how loud it is. And when i normally listen to tiesto I get energetic either way, but with digweed I always seem to listen late at night when I can't turn it up so...it gets draggy and kinda monotone. so i fall asleep...end of story
