Personally, when doing my show, I try to play as many indie artists as possible. I make a point of playing everything local, and granted, some of the luckier DJs in London get their stuff on wax, which I play, but most are perfectly satisfied sending me mp3s to play. Also, a lot of rare vinyls, or stuff that hasn't been released yet, I have on mp3. Of course I'll purchase them once I can find them, but I'm not going to be an ass and make my listeners wait until I order something from the UK.
As for the quality, I used to be all for new technology taking over the old. However, when I heard my first vinyl after hearing the same song over mp3 many times over (Sasha - Xpander), I was blown away. The acoustic qualities of a well maintained vinyl take the cake, and you can encode at 320KBS and piss everyone off with a 30 meg mp3 and it will never even come close.
So, for artists who need to get heard, vinyl is not necessary. However, vinyl is better, and supporting the artist who has released on vinyl is better...
