This is the most intriguing thread I have read on tranceaddict for a while and all the responses have presented so many interesting points. Hard trance (as much as I like it) will suffer the fate of others genres in the past (eg. hard house or nrg) and lose popularity. Hard trance has an expiry date and give it time things will move back to the softer sound (eg. trance). But for it to change the influential dj's in the scene will have to change their style (eg. hard trance dj's) cos essentially there the ones that influence the punters and bedroom bangers.

Sydney (Nik Fish, Amber Savage, Bexta, Jumping Jack) = HT

Melbourne (Midro, Scott Alert, Nexus, Master Kaos)

= melb. and syd. being hard trance dominated cities.

I agree partly. It would be nice to see the big name DJ's change their tune so to speak, but I really can't see that happening for a while. I think the way to popularise it more is to have clubs that offer it as their main style. They have to make a dent in the big clubs numbers though. The only way this is possible, I see, if it ALOT of money is put into it. Taking on the big clubs would be a major task. It's good to see club nights like 5AM and Altitude but I think the production, promotion etc is too small. It needs to be in peoples faces. Constant, eye-popping advertising. Great venue/sound/lighting. Big name DJ's. It needs to become an established club. Not easy in this hard trance dominated scene.

Do those DJs play hard trance because they really love that music, or because the club wants them to play that style (according to their music policy)?

Do the clubs think that because there are so many people who attend their regular events at which hard trance is played, that they believe such people really like hard trance? Maybe at the moment there is an "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" mentality with the established clubs like Sublime and Plastic. Maybe they believe hard trance still attracts a crowd, so why change when the money's getting raked in? In reality, I'm pretty sure there would be a significant proportion of people who care little about the music ("as long as there's a beat") and just want to be in a stylish venue with lots of supposed "cool" party people - I'm thinking especially of Sublime at Home.

However, the other side of the coin is that because hard trance is all that is exposed to the people, that's all they know and eventually they start to recognise tracks and start to like it. It's like commercial pop music. If all you ever listen to is commercial radio and you've never heard of trance, you'll probably start liking the pop, because you don't know any better and you have become comfortably accustomed to the mindset that has been programmed into your mind from the repeated exposure.

I totally agree. One of my dreams would be Sublime changing their music policy to have uplifting trance in the main room, with people who are very trance-focused, like the Altitude guys, running it.

So many of us on ITM spent all sorts of time responding to your questions - to say that our responses werent "in depth" is ludacrist orpheus!

People really valued that thread - this shows how much you 'valued our opinon.

oh, ffs. i appreciate that you're passionate about trance, but he didn't say anyone's opinions were worthless.

It's the internet -- nothing's meant to be taken that seriously. To suggest otherwise is ludicrous.

The Melbourne Techno scene has thrived for years without any of this advertising/marketing...why?
Because if the music is good then you will build a loyal support base of good people and then the followers will come.

i dont think i have much to add to what other people have said, and i cant really be stuffed thinking about it either hehe
people who like this music just have to accept that it isn't as popular in the mainstream as they would like, so just deal with it. its not like australia is completely trance starved. just about every big event we have is headlined by trance djs unless it is specifically about another type of music.

another point:

whats the deal with that? what difference does the medium make? if someone makes a point, or an argument, or insults you, how is this an excuse? 'its the internet, it doesn't count'. why not? they still say it, they still mean it.

My passion has nothing to do with this.

I never implied that he said that our opinions were worthless.
So i suggest that you dont jump to conclusions.

And so what if its the internet?

Does that some how mean that my opinion should be taken any less seriously? I respect orpheus's thread and his comments and have nothing against him; however i feel that those replies on ITM shouldnt be discredited even if they were "less in depth"

Im not having a 'go' at you or orpheus - i just feel that a little more credit should be given to those who took the time out to reply and answer his questions rather than dismissing them for lacking in depth.

The people on ITM valued his thread and his opinions and the last thing he should say about them and their responses that they werent in depth enough.

Music means many things to different people and some express it better than others but they all deserve the same respect no matter what medium they are communicated in.
