It just takes practice....after doing it a bunch of times you just get used to how it works and you know how far back you have to bring the fader depending on how fast/slow it's going. It's really not as hard as it seems to put it back where you need it especially with a +/- 8% control. This is the only way that I've found that I can beatmatch effectively on my Str8-80.

I havent been mixing for all that long, but i find i use an array of all methods. just really depends on the mood sometimes, but using the pitch control i find, is the smoothest. but most of the time, on initial release of the cue [after beat matching of course], i tend to either brush the platter if its too fast, of push the record on just outside the label, if its too slow. but during the mix, i'll use the pitch control to keep the beats aligned if they sway out. physically manipulating the tempo is too risky while ur in the mix!

i posted a thread like this a while ago, anyways what i got was if you have a low torque turntable like me, just use the spindle, otherwise you can just brush the platter or play with the pitch.

ill try to explain 'riding the pitch'...or at least my method

ill cue my record up and let it go at the appropriate time

there's a very very good chance that the record im cueing is completely off time so i just compensate by putting the pitch really fast until it catches up...
based on how long it took to catch up at like +8
(for example if it took really long for it to catch up...then it means that the pitch should be really close to where i am...maybe 1% slower...if it takes little to no time then it means it should be at like +2 or something drastically lower)

ill then appropriatly slide the pitch down...lets just use +3 as an example
if the cued record then becomes too slow, then i know that the pitch is somewhere between +3 and +8
meanwhile i judge how long it took to come out of synch at +3...if it took a long time then i know its really close to +3, if it took short then i know its more towards maybe +5 or 6

then you just keep closing the gap

keep in mind this occurs a lot faster than it sounds
it basically just looks like im some noob playing with the pitch control sliding it up and down randomly...it matches shit really fast though

then when you bring the cued record into the mix...if you need to adjust it, just move the pitch slightly up or down (depending if its too slow or fast) and let the cued record naturally catch up or slow down until they're in synch again...then putthe pitch back to where it was or slightly off if the original place the pitch was was too fast or slow

it sounds confusing but its really just common sense
like if your mix is trainwrecking then don't wait for it to slowly catch up to eachother...fix it quick
but if the beats are just starting to drift a little...just adjust the pitch a little bit
sounds a lot better imho and you can worry about other stuff while the cued record is catching up/slowing down instead of losing flow in the mix because you're using both hands on the record


all you really have to do is think about it for a second
i always had trouble then i just thought of this method one day (that i described above) and its been a breeze ever since

I've been practicing with the pitchmatching technique, and I've gotten a great deal better. It's much more accurate than handling the record, and I can match much quicker now and with much greater accuracy.

yeah, that's the method i use, match them and listen how long it takes for the beats to get out of synch. if it takes a while, i was very close. if it goes out of synch pretty quick, i'm off.

when I'm mixing in my phones before i intro the second track, i never touch the record, i just use the slider. but when i let go of my cue and it's off, i will grab the spindle/press on the label near the spindle to slow it down, or to speed it up i will push it near the spindle.

i'm sure that using the pitch slider is more accurate. i also have the str8-80s and they are really sensitive to touch...i'm just not at that point where i can adjust it live w/ the pitch slider yet..someday....

It's a lot less noticeable then manipulating the platter I think. Since you also have Str8-80s, have you noticed it's easier to match when they're switched on +/- 10%?

no, i haven't even worked w/ the 10% yet, the trax i spin just don't sound good when their speed is messed w/ that much...

i will have to try that and see if it is easier. though i would think the 8% is easier, b/c in most cases a +/-1% change is equal to about a shift of one bpm for the track...

and i was messing around w/ manipulating the platter, which i never do, and i don't like it b/c it is sooo sensitive to touch..

I agree with everyone here that using the pitch slider is crucial to getting that perfect beat match. Also, I'd imagine it's better for your tables, especially if they are cheaper ones.

One important thing I look for when trying out a turntable is how much resistance the pitch slider has. I like a heavy resistance so you can make fine adjustments. One idea that would be VERY handy would be to have a marker or indicator that you could set to a certain level so you know what level to bring the pitch back to.

One more point: Although the pitch shifter is more precise and probably better for your decks, there's no more personal way of mixing than doing it manually. If you're used to doing your mixes manually then definately do it occasionally, you'll feel the groove just a little more than you would with a slider.
