In the $100-$150 USD range, the Klipsch ProMedia 2.1s are excellent.
Bose is so overpriced, and there quality is simply subpar. You pay thousands of dollars for speakers made our of plastic and paper, when you could spend a couple hundred on some Paradigms or Mirages and get nice speakers made out of serious materials such as polypropalene (sp?) and hardwood casing.
Personally, I have a Yamaha RX-V596 receiver, two of the older series Mirage speakers (AVS200 I think) and a Mirage sub (don't remember). They get a bit harsh at very high volumes, but they can be obscenely loud, and at normal listening levels they sound seamless and natural... I love them, and if you have a couple hundred USDs, I highly recommend them.

it all depends on what the application is, and what someone's budget is...
