In the $100-$150 USD range, the Klipsch ProMedia 2.1s are excellent.
Bose is so overpriced, and there quality is simply subpar. You pay thousands of dollars for speakers made our of plastic and paper, when you could spend a couple hundred on some Paradigms or Mirages and get nice speakers made out of serious materials such as polypropalene (sp?) and hardwood casing.
Personally, I have a Yamaha RX-V596 receiver, two of the older series Mirage speakers (AVS200 I think) and a Mirage sub (don't remember). They get a bit harsh at very high volumes, but they can be obscenely loud, and at normal listening levels they sound seamless and natural... I love them, and if you have a couple hundred USDs, I highly recommend them.

If you want a very accurate speaker, used for professional monitoring situations, try out the Dynaudio Acoustics 'Air' series.

Really insane speakers.

Unfortunately they are alittle pricey. I dont know the exact price, but the Air 15's go for around $3,299.00 US.

and just pair it up with an Air-Base 1.

For regular home listening I've heard that the Quad L Series is very nice. Unfortunately I've never listened to them, and I dont know their price.

When making a serious speaker purchase you should consider many different brands and go audition them each at audio stores. The best way to find a good speaker is to listen to it. This way you can find a speaker that has just the sound you're looking for. I wouldnt recommend buying speakers just because other people say they are good, because each person has different preferences in sound.

And there are many many speaker brands out there, with some amazing stuff. For example Totem Acoustics in canada. Just take a look at these:

you can find the best speakers hands down in a magazine called audiophile, but let me warn that they do have speakers in there that go for 15,000 USD for a pair, so it ain't for the normal customer just looking for speakers
