TommyD Vs. Dj NGE
Okay here it goes!
Mix 1
2/4pts Intro Track
I think that this track was a poor choice for intro tracks. The beginning is pretty boring and it takes it almost 2.5 minutes to even start going somewhere.
5/10pts Consistent Beatmatching
Beatmatching was slightly off on the second transition. The 4th transition was of course not beatmatched well at all, but I¡¦m sure you know that. It was a quick fix, but then you overcompensated too much and it became unbeatmatched again. The 5th was also a touch off for a few seconds. The 6th transition was going to be a really good one, but then the beatmatching was off just enough to notice it¡Xthis was due to the delay in the vocals compared to the live track. Transition 7 was not beatmatched 100%. Your beatmatching wasn¡¦t horrible, but the imperfections took enough away from the set.
8/10pts Consistent Phrasematching
The third transition didn¡¦t come in phrasematched. It was hard to tell, but it was noticeable to me. By this I don¡¦t mean that the tracks were not phrasematched, but rather you didn¡¦t mix the track in in-phrase. In general you did a good job, but work on bring the cue track in in-phrase.
8/10pts Track Key Matching, Volume Matching and Gain Structure
Your 5th transition was a bit bass heavy and too loud. You¡¦ve done a much better job with volumes on all of your previous transitions. The volume on the transition into the 7th track was a bit loud. Transition 7 was not in key.
7/10pts Track Selection
I think that most of these tracks are pretty good, but they are nothing really that spectacular. Track 4 especially, while it is a pretty good track, takes the energy right out of your set because there are so many long gaps of silence and beatlessness.
7/10pts +1 Mixing Style/Originality
You could have mixed out of track 1 at around 5 minutes instead of at 7 minutes, though your transition was close to flawless and the tracks went very well together. Your last transition really brought the whole set together (bonus point), for two reasons: First, it was very well done as far as elimination of the bass and making it a very original transition. Second, the two tracks brought up the energy beyond the rest of the set and would be sure to hype the crowd up. The last track had a few down tempo parts, but otherwise it was a great way to end a set. I think that this is a good track choice for originality, I would work on tightening up your mixes¡Xespecially those first few!
5/5pts Sound Quality
No problems here.
1/3pts Effects
The jet/flanger effect during the first track were not in phrase and cut too short. Other than this, you didn¡¦t do any effects that I could pick out.
4/5pts Track Order
I think that with the tracks that you selected there were a few in the middle and end that could have been more towards to beginning, but otherwise good job.
2/3pts Exit Track
The track just kind of wound down at the end with no real grace or closure.
Total = 50/70 = 71%
Mix 2
4/4pts Intro Track
I really liked this track as an intro track. Vocal intro tracks are very good IMO, because they entice the audience to listen even when the track isn¡¦t as upbeat as the rest of the set. The effects during the beginning of the track really helped it pick up too.
10/10pts Consistent Beatmatching
Your first transition was very good extended, quality beatmatching! In fact, you tend to draw your transitions out quite nicely throughout the set. I noticed no beatmatching errors.
10/10pts Consistent Phrasematching
You are always right on with phrasematching! Everything that you do is in phrase, very well done, this is one thing that most amateur djs slack on.
8/10pts Track Key Matching, Volume Matching and Gain Structure
The volume level on track 5 is a bit loud compared to the rest of your set. All the tracks are in key and the volumes are good for most of the set. It is best at the start and middle, and gets a bit worse at the end.
9/10pts Track Selection
These tracks are made for each other! I would probably take out the Plastic Boy track and switch it with something not as harsh and grainy, but other than that these track¡Xas I have said above¡Xare made for each other!
8/10pts Mixing Style/Originality
I think that you draw out your transition a bit longer than needed, but if that is your style, then I can¡¦t argue. What I do suggest is that while you exit the live track at the right time, you bring in the next track a bit too early. This will help you tighten up your transitions a bit.
4/5pts Sound Quality
The balance on your 6th track was quite wacky for the first minute or so. It also is kind of low quality as far as the mids and highs go. I¡¦m assuming that it was an MP3 or the eqs weren¡¦t adjusted correctly¡XI know that some vinyl doesn¡¦t have increadible sound quality (due to mastering), but I could pick this track out specifically out of all of your others to have the worst sound quality.
1/3pts +2 Effects
The scratching that you did during the beginning of the set was very very well timed. Scratching is incredibly hard to pull off in a trance set and you did it very tastefully and well timed (bonus points!). Other than this, there really weren¡¦t any effects that I could pick out.
4/5pts Track Order
The first two tracks are incredibly well suited for each other. The last three tracks don¡¦t mesh as well as the rest of your set, but they do fit together.
2/3pts Exit Track
I own this track ļ I think that there are other better suited exit tracks because this one drops down the energy at the end with just a bass beat. But it does end the set well and your spin down is nice too.
Total = 62/70 = 89% (the best score I¡¦ve given so far, I believe!)
I declare mix2 to be the undeniable winner. Mix1 was good quality, but mix2 is one of the best mixes I have heard so far in this competition! Congratulations!
