If I understand it, Chechnya is still officially a part of Russia, even though their de facto organization seeks separation, to which Russia will not recognize. It's not unlike China/Tibet. I could be wrong about this, though, but it's been the source of their strife since the early 1990s.

Chechnya is indeed still part of Russia, though the Chechnyians consider themselves separate from Russia and have fought to be independent.

It is, but it's as much a part of Russia as Puerto Rico is of the US. Saying he spent time in Russia doesn't automatically mean he was even anywhere near Chechnya.

It is being reported that their neighbor recognized them from the FBI photos and this set the whole thing off. Why they stopped to rob a 7-11 I have no idea.
