De-Forestation Forcing Squirrel Population to Find a New Home
Dec. 20, 2003
(REUTERS) - The balance of nature in local forests has been upset, and it appears some of the denizens have been upset as well.
Recently a wave of new interlopers has systematically attempted to steer the ecological balance in their favor and have in the process removed many of the trees in which the playful and light hearted squirrels make their home.
P.J. Michelewiecz, a researcher for the Department of Forestry and world recognized woodland translator was asked what he thought of the situation.
"It is rather disturbing. We have a indigenous population of tree dwellers that have always taken good care of the forest, and now they are being forced to find new homes because the de-forestation. It has made it impossible for them to live comfortably," said Michelewiecz.
One angry member of the squirrel population agreed to have their words printed but asked to have their name withheld for fear of retribution. Mr. Michelewiecz agreed to translate.
"Squeak thwak scraw cher da weeeki wisha rawra chirp shwernarwa," said the squirrel.
"What my little friend here has said," Michelewiecz translates, "is 'These self-centered whores have taken away my happy home. No more trees, no more happy banter between neighbors, they stick their nose into everything and are destroying the happiness of the forest.' It looks like he is not happy at all."
"Wharwa shlat weekili crax," exclaimed the squirrel as he stamped away.
When asked what the squirrel said Michelewiecz replied, "He says he is of to find a new home, he will miss his friends and pretty flowers, but there is no other chance of survival for him, this is very sad."
It is quite apparent that the level of deforestation in such a short timeframe has taken much of the population off guard and unprepared to react in time to save their happy home.
On longterm impact of the de-forestation, Michelewiecz stated, "It will undoubtedly lead to other species leaving for new grounds as well. Utimately, even the invaders will find themselves with out a place to live."
Current studies show a stronger squirrel populations out west, with healthy squirrel populations. According to those studies, there should be room for those displaced, however, it remains unfortunate such spieces were forced out in the first place. Many believe that land management may have become suspect, and overdue for audit, however, until that is done, the forests in the area will continue to deteriorate.

It's so sad to see this happen so close to home
