Thought I would inject my running experience into this thread (not calling it gospel, just what works for me) I run about 45-60 miles a week, and I pretty much keep the stretching to after the run. The only time I do it before and after is if I am doing a track workout or fartlek, where I will do a 10-15 minute warm-up, stretch, workout, cool down (15-20), then stretch again. If I am on an easy day or long run, I sort of just stumble out of the house and into a slow pace for the first 15-20 then pick it up. Always stretch afterwards.
I'm no good at ball sports, hence all the running.

totally agree, I have another two hours of work to get through before I can go run. I am skipping this thread until I get home
