I understand what you're saying here, but with all due respect it indicates that you don't have the musical experience that others in this thread do. |
Actually I am going on 10 years of listening to EDM and Trance. I was sucked into trance in 1993 when the cool thing was the UK breakbeat stuff with at annoying speeds. I found refuge in trance. Harfloor, Jam El Mar, Illuminate. I then evolved into the UK prog sound. Labels like Limbo, Deconstruction, Hardhands. From there I became a Sasha & Digweed fan. Northern exposure with its beautiful soundscapes opened me up to a much more peaceful sound of EDM. As Sasha & Digweed started getting deeper, I followed along too. After Communicate" I think they peeked for me. Instead of going musical again, at that point they became too deep for my tastes. I was frustrated with prog/trance for about 2 years. And then I heard Markus Schulz. For me he Continued where Sasha & Digweed left me at 2 years earlier.

You reference an "in your face super saw" as contrast to why you like American prog, which indicates to me that you've merely realized epic super saws to be overused and unimaginative. Everyone who gets hooked on trance has a time when they realize that, and for many of us speaking against American progressive, it was years ago.

As you can tell from my timeline, I was never into the supersaw sound. I always looked for deeper more meaningful music right at the very begining.

House music has always been very simple. Its about the feeling and vibe. The EDM genre has always had a cycle of going from overly produced mega tunes with all the bells and whistles and then goes back to the basic vibe of the groove. I find this genre of music to be very refresing for me. It has the feeling of the early days with the big massive basslines, yet still has very catchy melodies on top. At the end of the day, I want melodies with my grooves.

Again for me, this has been my evolution and I just cant relate too music without melodies. I feel much more comfortable with music that has a story to it, instead of the true progressive music that only relies on noises. Sure some of those noises are really cool, but like I said, at the end of the day...melodies is what puts a smile on my face. From the days of labels like Harthouse and Eye Q to todays GDJB/ASOT sounds, it is the feeling that I get.
