Yea I know, I'm already nervous. They are shutting down schools tomorrow. I'm gonna swing by the store real quick and make sure we have all we need just in case (beer, water, food lol) and duct tape. Our poor little kitty that we just got is going to have a heart attack.

I am right there with you. I actually wish I was switched in roles right now.... my buddy works at the Key West National Weather Service office. I'd love to be there.
TS to Cat 1... nothing to worry about. Just a few days of inconvenience.

exactly. my mom is being such a drama queen. she is in ny and was due back tomorrow afternoon and she was acting like it was the fucking end of the world today. caught a flight home tonight and she is calling everyone like OMG BLA BLA BLAB AL and calling me every 10 minutes while i'm trying to take a damn nap.
she kept telling me to watch the weather and get back to her. i was like, "mom it's a tropical storm, it's gonna be shitty weather and 60+ mph winds" and she was like, "i know but i want to know what it's going to do for the rest of the week". i was like, "um, rain?" lol god she is so annoying sometimes.

You guys are idiots. It doesn't matter if it's a TS or a Cat 1 or Cat 4, it's still dangerous. It's already killed people. A roof missing or a tree on top of your house is a LITTLE bit more than an INCONVENIENCE. Seriously.
And Jamie we got THOSE kind of kink supplies too

I'd love to be down there for a storm sometime as long as its Cat1 or a TS. Category 3+, sorry, my ass is going back north where it's safe

well i guess i've never been majorly inconvenienced like that and i've been lucky. i've been living down here for a really long time, through andrew in the 90's and wilma & katrina too. lost power for a really long time and had a bunch of trees down, etc... but that was about it. i always view TS as "ehh, nothing we're not used to down here".
i kinda wish i went jet skiing with them now, i see all the surfers on the news at the beach and it looks fun to be in the water now lol

I am not an idiot. There is a huge difference between a tropical storm/category 1 hurricane and the higher category hurricanes. First and foremost - wind.
Think about the midwest - or places with intense thunderstorms. Winds of 60 to 100 mph are never out of the question.
Second - the deaths in Haiti? Human error. Follow simple rules... 'turn around - don't drown'. Some of the people that died tried to cross a swollen river in their car.
Third - I agree that it is dangerous, but if people adhere to common sense... why worry? This isn't an Andrew or Katrina.
Lastly.... if a roof was ripped from a house in something like this - it must be in really shitty condition.
Category One Hurricane:
Winds 74-95 mph (64-82 kt or 119-153 km/hr). Storm surge generally 4-5 ft above normal. No real damage to building structures. Damage primarily to unanchored mobile homes, shrubbery, and trees. Some damage to poorly constructed signs. Also, some coastal road flooding and minor pier damage. Hurricane Lili of 2002 made landfall on the Louisiana coast as a Category One hurricane. Hurricane Gaston of 2004 was a Category One hurricane that made landfall along the central South Carolina coast.

yea during katrina it was pretty scary when it hit. it gets really quiet and eery in the eye of the storm and then all hell breaks loose.
my mom has sliding glass doors that go out to her patio and out back is a big grassy area with a small canal and i swear there were like tidal waves in that canal. it was crazy. ducks flying around n shit (not purposely lol) and her sliding doors were vibrating really violently from the wind, i was scared they were going to shatter and blast open any minute.
then no one's cell phones worked for like 3 days and it was like chaos in the streets with no lights working or anything. cars couldn't even drive in the street there were so many trees and debri everywhere. a few restaurants would try to open and it was weird going to them, working with minimal supplies. like "yea uhh, we dont have that, but i can make you this" lol
then a cold front came and it was like camping. got drunk every night with my neighbors out back and fired up the grill and cooked all their meat before it went bad and played board games. it was kinda cool.
