i'll just post this here too:

there used to be some sort of database about tunes that go well with others on the web somewhere, but i can't find it anymore. anyone got a link to it?

i'd need to get from
lyric & n atali - over emotion (smart system souvenir mix)
or
little wonder - exlipse (fictivision & c-quence remix)
to
airwave - when things go wrong (original)
as short and good sounding as possible, but i don't seem to be able to pull it off no matter what tunes i try with!

and what's the difference between
F#m and Fm?
other one's major and other one's minor or what? if so which is which?
(couldn't be bothered to read the whole thread, as it's so huge)

^^^ F#m is F-sharp major, Fm is F major. The difference is a F-sharp is a half step higher in pitch.

well now i read the whole topic and all i have to say is:

i will definitely be looking much more into this! thanks guys. dunno how i'll go about keying my own tracks as i have no musical background whatsoever and i suck as a dj in every aspect too, but one can always try and you gotta start somewhere.
this thread got me so excited that i feel like going mixing straight away, altho it's the middle of the night and my girlfriend is sleeping in our bedroom (where my dj gear is naturally)

maybe i can wait till tomorrow!

WOOOOOWWW! Hold on a minute Zild!!!!!
F#m IS F# MINOR NOT MAJOR, it would be just F# for a major!!!!
Similarly Fm is F minor!!!
99% of trance is in minor keys.

I agree: 99% of trance is probably in minor keys, as is perhaps 95% of all dance music since the 1980s. Major keys are still popular in R&R and other pop music styles.

Also: Qualia's collaborative database on mixshare.com contains key information on the most tracks. Our subscription database only contains info on 50,000 tracks.

My bad, I always wrote it as Fmaj. I guess thats why they made me play the quads in middle school band. No big deal.

Just wondering if you made a typo here. You say that major/minor chords use the 1st 3rd & 5th note of the scale. Shouldn't major chords be "W+W, H+W" ?

Anyway I've read through your tutorial, very interesting
So I gave it a shot, trying to figure out wether a track is major/minor:

Electric Universe - Morning Star (SAMPLE)

Tonic note: G

Major or minor?
Minor: Trying G+A#+D (Sounds good)
Major: Trying G+B+D

Conclusion:
Assuming the chords you mentioned in your tutorial are correct, it's a Gm !

Very helpful tutorial qualia

EDIT: I wrote a wrong major key!
