Hmm, could you first try to delete all the avahi-daemon links in "/etc/rc*.d/"? On my system they are in rc0,rc1,rc2,rc3,rc4,rc5,rc6 but not in rcS.d. So delete those (which is quite safe since it's only links), then reboot and see if it works?

I just think that is some kind of result from the other core problem, I have a hard time seeing ip-tables destroying your whole system, but I could be wrong

Alright, lemme give that a shot.

BTW, are you root by default in restore mode (the only way to go straight to command line btw)?

I'm guessing the safest way of doing it would be to use the live CD to upgrade? Does it give you that option when you boot from it?

Well, not the whole folder, but the links to the avahi daemon? Like for example there is a file called "/etc/rc0.d/K20avahi-daemon" on my system, that's the file you should delete (and the others in the other folders referring to the avahi?

Trying to fix it by upgrading using the live CD as opposed to a clean reinstall.

If you download the latest there's definitely the upgrade option. But yeah, I guess you could create a shell from the livecd to start apt from your old os and from there do an os-upgrade!
