yes, you can copyright midi's ... or rather the contents of a midi could already be copyrighted, thats what form PA is for. yes, John you are in violation of copyright law if you post or distribute those midi's on the "internet", $150,000/song but... are you doing it for a profit? no. for education? yes. effect on the market? small/none. And you are only using a small portion of each song ... sounds like you could claim fair use to me... but dont quote me on that, i am no lawer.
yes, you can copyright a melody, you cant however copyright a note or a chord

yes, if you take the original SOUND(as in waveform) and reuse it then you are in violation of copyright.

i'm starting to think that if you can't make your own midi's that you might have a bit of a hard time becoming a successful producer...

well, that's not everyone's goal is it?
i bet even the most succesful producers will have trouble figuring out difficult melodies. but ofcours it will help you a lot if you can. and in that part i agree with you. if you can easily recreate melodies, you are most certainly better at creating good ones yourself, since you know which chords progressions and notes will sound good or cause emotion or something

That's true i've never learned to play any instrument, but i can make some nice melodies.
