Great, but there's no convenient 'upgrade and fix' type option in the wizard? I've never written a script in my life (such a n00b!)

EDIT: The script are mostly just bash commands right?

I think it's enough if you do something like "chroot /path/to/os/" and then do the "do-release-upgrade" command. Should work!

There is no repair option on the live CD =/. But I managed to get an external HD to back up my data and do a clean install , SUSE has had it for ages. What the hell is up with Ubuntu? And all because of a damn WPA key * shakes head *. Now I'm going to have to make all the customizations and crap I did, stuff I can't even recall at the moment. =/

first visit to this thread... Can someone recommend the version of Linux that is most compatible with typical hardware and software? I don't want lots of hassle. Is there any version yet that recognizes most devices instantly, and can easily connect to the net, watch movies, stream music, recognize printers, etc? I want to throw it on an old Pentium 3.

@ NeoPhono: Just noticed you're online, if you can help... that would be great. I'm in the process of backing up gigs and gigs of data on a borrowed external HD, something I'd rather avoid. I'm not a fan of reformat and installs =/.

Ah, Ubuntu is pretty good, I just managed to fuck it up an issue you won't have trust me. You can do all the things you listed before with great ease. Infact, you can run the OS off the live CD which you can download here:

http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download

It's an ISO image, just burn it to CD and run the operating system right off of it and see how you like it, and then install it right from there too. Assuming you don't have super recent hardware, you shouldn't have any driver issues whatsoever. It's Linux made easy basically, and I'll be more than happy to help you and answer questions if you have any problems. I've tried quite a few distros by now, and I'd highly recommend this for a Ubuntu for newbies and veterans alike.

Deleting the symbolic links didn't work? At least it should have given you another error message! Guess you could backup your settings files in your home directory? That would save you a lot of work Also, it's a great idea to have a separate partition for /home/ in case something like this happens!

Or if you wanted a 'skinned' Linux Ubuntu OS...

Actually looks quite nice too....
