first visit to this thread... Can someone recommend the version of Linux that is most compatible with typical hardware and software? I don't want lots of hassle. Is there any version yet that recognizes most devices instantly, and can easily connect to the net, watch movies, stream music, recognize printers, etc? I want to throw it on an old Pentium 3.

Ah, Ubuntu is pretty good, I just managed to fuck it up an issue you won't have trust me. You can do all the things you listed before with great ease. Infact, you can run the OS off the live CD which you can download here:
http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download
It's an ISO image, just burn it to CD and run the operating system right off of it and see how you like it, and then install it right from there too. Assuming you don't have super recent hardware, you shouldn't have any driver issues whatsoever. It's Linux made easy basically, and I'll be more than happy to help you and answer questions if you have any problems. I've tried quite a few distros by now, and I'd highly recommend this for a Ubuntu for newbies and veterans alike.
