It's not so black and white: we're not talking here about something being either selfish or selfless, it's much more profound than that!

OK cause last time I checked I was arguing two things.

1. Suicide is tragic and affects people around the person who does it.
2. Suicide is selfish, inherently selfish because of the above, and because in the end the only true benefactor is the dead person.

Just making sure we are all the same topic here.

How is it more profound. Maybe if killing themselves saved another life, the yes, that is not selfish suicide. It is still tragic, but its not selfish.

If the only one getting the benefit is the person killing themselves then that is selfish.

We agree with #1, but #2 does not follow from that.

That seems implausible. For example, if just a few thousand Floridians had killed themselves a decade or so ago, American society might have benefitted to the tune of a couple of trillion dollars, and many more people the world over might not have had to endure the death of loved ones.

Everything is connected; our lives affect more people than we can imagine, often adversely. It seems to me to be a rather bold claim that there is no individual in the entire world for whom the net utility produced by their death would be positive.

It's the choice to end your own life, i.e. to give up everything you have, all you've ever had, and anything you could possibly ever have. Your relation to other is immediately shut when you're dealing with this: unless someone else's survival depends on you, this is the greatest decision you could ever make, and nothing - absolutely nothing - compares to that.

To even compare this with the happiness of others is so out of scale that if someone else thinks their happiness is more important than someone else's decision to end their existence, this is not a matter of being selfish or selfless, but sheer cruelty.

Yeah. It's a good thing Hitler didn't commit suicide earlier. That would have been fucking selfish of him
