Just so you people know.. the only American News network that is breifed by the pentagon on a frequent basis is CNN.

That is why it is extremely biased.

As well... the implementation of American journalists along with the military in this war has made coverage of the events grossly biased. The American media have literally become the military and have consequently de-integrated the nuetral perspective they should otherwise take.

don't you just love it how war in the real world can cause war online too .. see war is a byproduct of war.. which is why we should stop making war..

You first, you started this argument with no facts whatsoever (other than your family ties... what-the-fuck-ever, a lot of us have those). And I think you said to joe that 18 out of 600 went to Ivy League schools? That's pathetic! Especially considering that they have international (max) quotas! Most of these schools accept at least 10% (shall we be conservative and say 5?) of their applicants, so if only 3% got in, what does that say about your school!?

quote:
May I remind you that in many public highschools in the U.S. 90% is an A- and 94 is an A?

Doesn't that just disprove most of the things you've said right there? You said it yourself, a 90% in a U.S. public high school means the same as an 80% here. How can that possibly work in favour of your argument?

quote:

Ok, I'll give up now because what you said made absolutely no sense.
So guys, don't hate me because I'm American ok? And because I dance better than you lol...Look better than you...Just kidding.

Nice trolling. We applaud you. I guess I can't speak for what you look or dance like since I've never seen you (have any TOTAs, out of curiosity?), but as for the rest, it sounds very pseudo-intellectual. And also very typical of someone in humanities. Why do the artsy ones always think they're so smart?

Last but not least, you guys don't even know how to use the freakin' metric system, so just hang your heads in shame.

This was all started by Oceanlab who boasted about his 'georgetown' education. Assuming that made his points all the more valid and that our feeble canadian brains couldnt possibly follow along. I certainly don't think our system is better, I never said it is and if you actually did read my posts I said I thought our high school system was terrible. I was just defending my country the way I saw it and pointed out what I thought some common misconceptions.

Don't attack our system and then criticize us for trying to defend it. That's pretty low. If you didn't think it was all that big of an issue you shouldnt have made the arguement in the first place. How do you think people are going to respond when you tell them they are full of shit?

Of course schools differ significantly from one jurisdiction to the next and perhaps the schools that you are thinking of (may they be innercity or in a poorer area) are not at the same level that the majority of U.S. schools are at.

I guess that wouldnt apply to Canadian high schools though would it. I mean of course when it's Canada, the one or the few you've studied obviously represents the rest of the country.

No not really. I have heard too much criticism of the American system too think it would be that lopsided. In the end all we can do is speculate. Personally, I dont really think they are all that much different. It is an interesting debate though.. maybe we should transfer this to a new thread. This one is kind of getting clogged.

My personal experience, attending institutes of higher education in eahc country led me to believe that US universities were easier.

You just said it right there! Only 50-80 people would even have a chance of being accepted! Case closed.

quote:

YOU MORON!!! because it is easier to get an A in Canada, you don't have to get as high as percentage. Considering the FACT the curriculum is easier that means that the States equivelent of a Canadian A is probably around 75%. That means that C students in America would get A's in Canada.

Okay look, I'll try not to be patronizing but you've got this backwards. We don't USE letter grades in Canada (at least not before I graduated 3 years ago). So the American universities developed a system for converting our number grades to your letter grades (or GPA): An 80% from a Canadian high school is considered an A, or a 4.0 GPA if they need a GPA. Yes, this is a fact, I had to look into this when I applied to the U.S., so please do not argue it.

P.S. nice spelling of "equivalent", smartass. I normally don't nit pick about that, but since you are arguing about education...

All I can say about education systems is that US education system is FAR FAR worse than East European education system(just look at results from various international math, informatcs, physics, chemistry olympiads).. Americans with their HUGE population are OFTEN beaten by countries like Romania, Poland etc with far smaller populations.

^ trudat... Canada sucks in that regard too, gotta admit.

I don't think the Canadian education system is good... just that anyone who says the U.S. education system is better must've hit the crack pipe pretty hard.

Actually, we are not too bad. At least one Canadian wins a gold medal in each of those olympiads pretty much every year. But we definitely don't have what it takes to compete with countries like Russia, Romania, China and other scientific olympiads monsters.

That's very foolish and is quite a leap in logic. Every school even here in Canada uses very different grading standards. I think what he is trying to say is that a 95 there could represent an 85 here.

What is your point here? That most schools have the same acceptance rate as yours and Ivy league schools generally accept 30% of their applicants (doesn't much help your case about Ivy league standards) or that you were lucky enough to be in one of the better high schools in America?

I think the trouble is that too many Canadians and Americans alike think that liberal arts & humanities are "education"...

(kidding, please don't flame)
