You guys usually wake up and work out w/ out eating or eat and then work out?

Was told that cardio is better on an empty stomach but it's kind of a bitch when you want to do weights after cardio and you have no energy (since you haven't eaten).

this is the logic behind running on an empty stomach in the morning. usually when you run it takes a good 15-20 minutes for your body to use up the carbs that you've recently digested before you start burning alternative fuel sources...if you run on an empty stomach in the morning, then you don't have any carbs really in your system and then start to burn those alternative sources quicker...i.e. fat.

its probably not a great idea to do too much on an empty stomach because over that time, the likely hood of muscle being broken down is greater. but a morning run wouldn't hurt...but i'd eat before working out after a run...

ive tried every combo of day/night hungry/full possible and i have the most energy and the best workouts around 11:30-1:30 in the afternoon and Ive had a nice solid breakfast of a bagel, a half protein shake and a piece of fruit. at around 8-9 am.Then I work out without having eaten after breakfast. That way you are getting maximum blood flow and not working on digesting food (very energy draining process).

I like to do cardio in the morning, and then workout later on in the day. Of course, this is only an option when I'm in school and have tons of free time =P

that's a good point. you want to have food in your system when working out, but not while its digesting...its probably best to give it a good hour of digestion time before you work out.

also, when i was younger, i would wake up at 4:30 and lift weights before school. it was a pain in the ass, but i would still do it so that i could come home and lift after school too. even when i did that, i'd actually wake up at about 4am drink a shake and not lift until 4:30am...so even then i still needed something in my system when working out.

This has been highly debated for ages, and basically comes down to what works best for you.

No matter when you do cardio, and if you have anything in your stomach, does not change the fact it will take approximately 20 minutes of moderate cardio before you even BEGIN to burn fat storage. Before that, look at it as only calories being consumed. Some will say when doing cardio on an empty stomach your body will use muscle as energy since your body is depleted of carbohydrates.

I saw the best results on an empty stomach, but if you're looking to put on muscle mass it could be detrimental in the long run. If you're just looking to lose weight and get conditioned, go on an empty stomach and do not eat until one hour after doing cardio. Or you can take a protein shake prior to cardio.

The way I look at it now is, after doing cardio I can have another meal for the day, since all I basically burned was calories.
