Matt Darey was at his top of his game producing real epic trance.
He used very similar beat formulas but produced tunes which clearly were different from each other. Each tune had a beautiful magic spark to them
EX:
NightCrawlers-Never knew Love(matt darey remix)
Gigolo-Al PAradiso (matt darey remix)
M3-Bailamos
Gabrielle-RIse(matt darey)
GO listen to those tunes...similar formula but gorgeous sprinkle of pure talent
Lets flash forward to 2004
Derek howell is a producing Genious
Similar Prog Dreamy Breaky Formula but complete perfection and finetuning to never allow a rehashed melody like those McProg CHeeseHeads.
Ex:
Derek Howell-Come Again
Derek Howell-NonTechno Piece
Derek Howell-Aphotic
Derek Howell's remix oF Smight-God Strike's here
Compare now with today's McProg Pioneers
All of Markus S. ColdHarbour Remixes?----WTF???
All of Prosbot's whack ass tunes...Name some that exemplify perfection and nonsimilarity of formulas?
Perry Oneill--......... *sigh* do i need say more? |
unfortunately, i never said that derek howell didn't make good productions and i never said that markus, probspot, or perry o'neil are better producers, because thats just not true. I was making a point that Derek Howell does reuse similiar sounds and instruments in his tracks just like probspot does, and you can't honestly say all their tracks sound the same because you can easily pick out tracks which don't. Probspot - Blueberry or Probspot - Midnight. howabout, Perry O'Neil - Cold Fusion, Perry O'Neil - Wave Force (possibly the most hated prog-trance song on ta ever, lol!). and markus schulz... well i dunno his productions too well. never really got into his stuff. but look, all i'm saying is technically, these producers are pretty good and don't nearly deserve all the hate you guys give. you guys really go to extremes when your describing the quality of tracks and i think you should be a little bit more realistic.

EDIT: A counter argument to that would be; "McProg isn't formulaic and unoriginal because..." |
very true, but you take a standard McProg track, and any other trance track- no matter what they all generally follow the same pattern. IMO saying McProg is shit because they follow the same pattern or formula is a little harsh.
Do we consider PvD's productions mcprog? because he uses the same damn formula for all of his productions. the same boring basslines. Take Another Way and Connected. Same exact boring formula, same bassline, 2/3 of the way through the song changes key, then goes back, then it's over. Or how 'bout his TPOD mixes? same annoying ass clap that makes an appearance in ALL of his TPOD mixes - Club Attack, Empire, Guide me God, etc etc. using a formula to write a song is nothing new. Let's face it. most genres of trance are pretty damn predictable.
