IDM got its name after the IDM list, which was created to discuss the music released in Warp's Artificial Intelligence series (ironically, early IDM was quite danceable). So you see, IDM was never about "we're intelligent and you're not", although some elitist douchebags like to think that and point that out. They are equivalent of minimal hipsters on this board, and nobody should really give a shit about them.

And IDM was never influenced by jazz, the first one who started to incorporate elements of jazz into IDM was Squarepusher in the second part of the 90's, long after the IDM was born.

And most of the big names have distanced themselves from the 'intelligent-' label or at least the literal meaning of it.

Who are the big names that have been associated with it and why have they distanced themselves from it?

And Autechre had some jazz influences in their "Incanabula" album.

Autechre- Lowride

"Incanabula" is one of the most atmospheric electronic albums EVER (and "Amber" and "Tri Repetae" as well heh). Very futuristic, mysterious, melancholic, joyfull, dark, alien...at the same time...

Amon Tobin and Dj Shadow and stuff have some jazz infuences in Electronic music. Also what nefardec said about these deep house and techno names.

Yeah, forgot about that. They just used a sample of some old Miles Davis track here. Squarepusher, however, was the first who used a live instrumentation on one of his albums. Still, that doesn't mean IDM was influenced by jazz. It mostly evoluted from techno and electro.

And now because this thread is about IDM (lolz!) and because we need to reach the 1000 posts, i may also suggest the also amazing Bola, well, my favorite IDM producer. He was Autechre's engineer. Amazing musician/artist. His first album "Soup" is probably my favorite IDM album. He creates some amazing-almost alive- complex soundscapes which are very cinematic and exotic.

Bola- Versivo

Bola- Forcasa-1

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y-brBXXVOpE

(the way all the elements bind and develop...genious...you have to listen some other tracks like the epic Glink ,W.I.K, Pendulus, Amnion, Forcasa 2 and 3, Aguilla, Whoblo etc. in good quality to appreciate, next albums like Fyuti and Gnayse are also excellent.)

Other good atmospheric stuff come from Gescom, Proem, Biosphere (more ambient than IDM but has some elements),ì-Ziq, Boards of Canada, Global Communications, Casino Versus Japan...

Biosphere- The Things I Tell You

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cu3R0IGwasU

(Fron the second season of Twin Peaks)

"The Giant: Sorry to wake you.
Dale Cooper: I wasn't dreaming.
The Giant: I forgot to tell you something.
Dale Cooper: You were right about the smiling bag.
The Giant: The things I tell you will not be wrong..."

Bola is meh. Good producer of that style is Phonem. His Hydro Electric pisses all over everything Bola has ever done.

So, what genre is next?

Phonem is just like a copy of Arovane or something "typical ambient melody with bliicks cruusckss glitchh on top". Only Arovane is better. Doesn't EVEN come close to the organic and exotic lush deepness of Soup. Dude wtf?

Please. Arovane is basically Ulrich Schnauss with a much worse sense for melody, and pseudo complex programming. His and Bola's stuff is so pretty and sweet (in a bad way) that it makes me sick. Dude.

"Arovane is basically Ulrich Schnauss". Arovane were releasing albums from 1997, so were Bola. Ulrich Schnauss appeared on the map after 2000, just like this no-one phonem. You are just one of those IDM nerds who think that because a track has a sequence of 35 filtered glitches is "oh-so-Intelligent". So stupid.

Yeah, this is going to far and I have to go to sleep so...
Bola is ok, so are you. I actually said in one of your Bola worshipping threads that Kroungrine is one of my favs from 2007.
Arovane, however, still sucks. He's just to mellow and all girly. And I was comparing them, not saying he's copying Ulrich so my assertion is still valid. Dude
