I have a tremendous amount of respect for Robson but it is clear his hands are tied. Freddy Shepherd should either back him or sack him. At the moment Bobby is taking the blame for everything but we all know it's Shepherd who has gone all out for Rooney when we should be going all out for a defender. Yet it was Bobby who had to walk out on Barrack Road and justify it to the public. When you look at the quality we have and the way we are playing we should have a lot more than 2 points, everything comes back to our shambolic defending.
Not only is our defence poor but Newcastle are a team that just don't do defending, it's almost seen as something to be ashamed of, like we'd rather lose 5-0 throwing caution to the wind than scrape a 1-0 victory. I remember Craig Bellamy speaking a while ago about the attacking mentality of the club. I've never seen Newcastle defend properly in my lifetime, it's probably why we've won nothing in my lifetime.
NUFC.com wrote the following piece on today's events:
| quote: | You don't know what you're doing
That's usually a phrase reserved for referees but just as easily applied to the entire staff of Newcastle United Football Club; Chairman, Manager and players let's tar them all with the same, sorry, brush.
The shambles that unfolded at Villa Park had to be seen to be believed. Alan Shearer left on the bench, Kieron Dyer not in the 16, Stephen Carr captain, Lee Bowyer down the right, all decisions that had their own merits but are collectively symptomatic of a club in total disarray.
While our Chairman kids himself that Wayne Rooney could be interested in a move to Tyneside, his Manager presided over a rabble that couldn't defend to save their lives.
Ironically, referee Mike Riley also contributed to the farce with an error of Andy D'Urso proportions.
When Craig Bellamy charged in on goal and ex-mackem Sorensen handled out of his box there was only one possible decision. It's an automatic sending-off whether he has prevented a goalscoring opportunity or not. Ask Jussi Jaaskelainen who was red-carded at Bolton a few years ago for simply losing his bearings. Have the laws changed?
At that point we were leading 2-1.
From then on we capitulated to a degree that was even extraordinary for Newcastle, leaving fans bemused and frustrated.
Where do we go from here? Who knows? Something has to give soon. |

Robson has been sacked.
It was inevitable really, his hands were tied, he wasn't given the freedom to do the job properly and the results haven't gone our way this season. The media, too, has had a significant role to play in all of this, with ruthless attacks on the club all summer which have turned it into something of a soap opera. To quote Shay Given, "people have stopped watching Eastenders, now they are watching Newcastle".
I think it was a decision which should have been made this summer, as now he has had the indignity of being sacked after a poor start, and we have a search on for a replacement manager who will take time to settle with the new players, time we don't have.
Robson has turned this club around since taking control. He is one of the legends of football, doing his best at 71 years old to win trophies for the club he supported as a boy, and it's sad to see him go. But sadly he failed to sort out our eternal defensive problems and we still haven't won any trophies since 1969. Football is all Bobby has in his life, he lives and breathes the game and even at 71 he is one of the most passionate managers you will find.
