vtec here -

I can't see why the Yankees pay so much money for washed up pitchers......they think this is going to solve their problems....lol....can't wait to see a repeat of last season.

They are simply allocating the money they had spent last year on Johnson( who was also an older pitcher). If he wins 3 playoff games for the yankees the money was well spent.

perhaps...

i missed the discussion over the weekend where he explains in detail *why* he decided to come back to ny...then again i totally missed the memo regarding how he initally decided to retire from baseball altogether to be with his family in Texas...THEN ends up pitching for Houston part-time a short time later...ah well...i have way too much history to catch up on.

The Yanks are lucky to have so much money to throw at what could eventually be seen in hindsight as a 'temporary' solution after one year. but hey if he ends up working WELL, then it will end up having been a SMART hiring decision. Time will tell...

I'm surprised to hear that from you. I thought you would be happy about this news. Yes 4.5 million a month is alot, but look at clemens numbers from the past 3 seasons.

----------IP-----H----R-----ER---HR---BB----SO-----W--L----ERA
2004 Hou 214.1--169---76----71---15---79---218----18--4----2.98
2005 Hou 211.1--151---51----44---11---62---185----13--8----1.87
2006 Hou 113.1---89---34----29----7---29---102-----7--6----2.30

Each year his ERA was better than Chris Carpenter, and carpenter won the cy young in 2005 with a 2.83 ERA. 2005 was just nasty. Last year was no joke either. He definitely would have won the Cy young in 2005 if the astros could hit. I bet Clemens will win at least 10 games and lose less than 5. His ERA will go up because he's in the real league now, but i don't see it going over 3.50. he still has it, and the time off will help big time.

where is Johnson now btw? And how has he been doing overall? has anyone been following this? Im just curious. I def did not catch all the games he had pitched while he was with the Yanks but I didn't think he performed to expectations, but i could be totally off on that.

He's pitching for the D-backs. He's pitched three games and doesn't look very good. he has a bloated WHIP and has yet to win in his 3 starts. Getting rid of him was the absolute right move.

Johnson was the nastiest pitcher in baseball when he was on the mariners and the in his first stint with arizona. He was almost untouchable. We saw the declining RJ, which people shouldn't think was the real RJ. He's definitely a first ballot hall of famer.

exactly...i was expecting to see a powerhouse of a man when he came on the team. its too bad we didn't get to see the real RJ when he was on the Yanks. Did we know WHY he was declining - was it due to injury etc?

btw thanks for the recap

it's because he's OLD. He was doing what any normal human being (except roger clemens) does when he gets old. He falls from the top. it's not his fault. Blame gravity for putting so much stress on his body.

Yet all his years with the Yankees, he was league average or slightly better.
