Former Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier has also been mentioned about taking the role on a short-term basis until the end of the season with Shearer acting as the Frenchman's assistant.

My fucking word, please god dont let this be true, he'll fuck everything up and buy as many french players as he can.

I hope the Houllier rumours aren't true.

Rooney is certain to go to Man Utd now, although that doesn't bother me as I think we have a class striker in Kluivert.

It's going to be difficult to attract a defender without a manager. About 19 hours left to find a defender before the transfer window closes. Freddy Shepherd has made a right balls up of all this.

Now, really i cant see Newcastle bringing in a defender. This means we aint got a chance to Qualify for the Champions League, Probably not even the Uefa Cup.

Before we sold woodgate Freddy Shepherd should have looked to see what options we had available. He really is an idiot, letting Woodgate go for £13.4 million, Selling Solano. Hes just a general idiot.

Yes, i agree to get rid of Robson, but i bet he hasnt even thought about a replacement.

I'll say once again, Newcastle will finish mid table this year.

Robson should have been gone in the summer. He's sacked him now because of the international break, which means two weeks until our next match.

Shepherd made some good signings this summer, Carr for 2M, Butt for 2M, Milner for 3.5M and Kluivert for free were all great business. But by keeping on the manager while clearly not supporting him has had a bad effect on the dressing room, and going for Rooney when we need a defender sums up his attitude when we desperately need a centre back. All the players and all the fans are calling out for a defender. He has made a few 'enquiries' and small bids for Balde, Boumsong and a silly request for Cannavaro, but he's basically made fuck all real attempts to sign a defender and now we have 19 hours to try and find one without a manager.

We should have let Bobby go at the end of last season. I'd like to see us try hard to bring Phil Scolari in over the next two weeks but I think it's going to be a patch up job with someone coming in on a 'temporary basis' who doesn't give a shit about our future, keeping the position until Shearer can take over as manager at the end of the season. This club needs a shake up, someone coming in from outside with fresh ideas and fresh training and tactics, Shearer has no managerial experience, no coaches or backroom staff he can bring in so not a lot will change.

Birmingham warn Newcastle

Birmingham chairman David Gold has warned Newcastle they will not be able to prise away Steve Bruce to succeed Sir Bobby Robson.

Gold is adamant that Bruce, who led the Blues into the Premiership, will honour his newly-renewed contract.

"Steve Bruce is ambitious but he is a young man, he can bide his time and finish his job at Birmingham." he said.

"He is a Geordie and everyone knows his feelings, but I think that kind of connection is oversold in the media."

In a surprise move, Robson was "dismissed" on Monday from his role as manager following Newcastle's slow start to the season.

But Gold claims that his relationship with Bruce will ensure that his manager will stay put.

"He has a great working relationship with myself and the rest of the board. He has a five year contract," he said.

"I do not feel there will be the need to contact him to be assured of this because he is a man of integrity, and a man of his word," Gold concluded.

I don't want Steve 'I'm a geordie' Bruce here. He may have a decent if short managerial record but the guy's a twat and a manc-sympathiser.

We should show a bit of ambition and go all out for Phil Scolari.

Ladbrokes have got their odds out on the next manager:

A Shearer 9/4
S McLaren 7/2
S Bruce 5/1
G Houllier 6/1
G Strachan 6/1
T Venables 6/1
S Allardyce 16/1
A Curbishley 25/1
M O'Neill 25/1
D Moyes 33/1
G Graham 40/1
G Souness 40/1
L Scolari 40/1
M Hughes 40/1
G Hoddle 50/1
J Gregory 50/1
K Keegan 50/1
I Dowie 66/1
M McGhee 66/1
S Pearce 66/1
P Beardsley 100/1
P Gasgoigne 100/1

Bruce is an aspiring Geordie with an apalling loyalty problem but I just can't see Newcastle going for him, Shearer is probably still too inexperienced and they've surely plucked McLaren out of the air cause I can't see that one either. I reckon Martin O'Neill at 25/1 looks good.

I have to say that few names on that list fill me with confidence.

Big Phil Scolari and Martin O'Neill are the only ones on that list I'd be happy with. Sacking Robson was the right decision at the wrong time, Liverpool and Chelsea got rid of their managers at the end of last season and brought in seasoned replacements, now look at our situation.

Martin O'Neill might be an option next summer but he won't come now.

Big Phil Scolari is going to be working with the Portuguese national team for World Cup 2006 but he might fancy it.

We need someone with experience of working under massive pressure and someone disciplined because Newcastle have gone off the rails a bit. Scolari would be my first choice but it's a case of whether he'd come, he said he was approached by Everton in the summer and rejected it.

Curbishley has done a respectable job with Charlton but this would be a step up for him. Maybe he is ready for the step up, but it's difficult to wrench a manager from their current club when the season has started and the transfer window is over.

Shearer hasn't completed his UEFA coaching badges, but he will have by next summer.

This is the day of reckoning. Freddy Shepherd has:

Sold Woodgate for 13.4M
Told the fans they will be "pleasantly surprised with the outcome"
Told fans he didn't sell Woodgate without a long term plan
Places a 20M bid for Rooney, but Man Utd get involved.
Places a 23.5M bid for Rooney, still no mention of a defender
Sacks the manager
Rooney goes to Man Utd

This is his last day to get a defender and it'll be absolutely disgraceful if he doesn't. The Fat Controller will have conned all the fans and neglected the clubs most urgent requirement. If he fails to bring in a defender today Shepherd has to go.

The way Shepherd has treated Bobby, treated Newcastle and lied repeatedly to the fans is outrageous. Let's not forget that this is the man who was exposed on tape in a Spanish brothel insulting the people of the region, he demonstrated his disregard for this club and the people a long time ago. We have conceded 9 goals in 4 games, if he doesn't sign a defender today he can expect a massive backlash from the fans.
