Yes and no - Clemens is an arm for hire and the Yanks had the highest demand for his arm. I think his signing hurts your ability to farm (ranked 7th from 27th in '04) and places a lot of pressure on you to win now with a team that is mediocre in comparison to your most recent World Series teams. Let's face it, Clemens is a quick fix, a stop gap to a much larger problem. Your staff is aging and aging quickly and only Hughes waits in the wings. After this season you need to get young, talented arms and the 20 million you dropped on Clemens will serve as an unwelcome handicap.
Plus, the thought of bringing back the "Who's your dealer" chant when Clemens makes his return to Fenway sounds almost to good to be true.
As for Matz, people who thought he'd dominate here, right away, like he did in Japan were foolish. The same learning curve that Beckett experienced last year, he's experiencing in the present at a much greater degree. I expect him to rebound slightly, say sometime around the all star break and not fully fill his shoes until next season. |
how is signing clemens going to hurt the farm? It was a money transaction. Let's not forget wang. We still have sanchez and every other pitching prospect we picked up this offseason. Please explain how it hurts the minor league system.
as for beckett, he's going to slide. While he looks good, he still hasn't faced any real offensive teams besides the yankees(where he was ok, not spectacular). I mean, seattle, KC, Bal, Oak, and LA. That's not exactly the cream of the crop as far as offensive powers. Before i say that beckett is hitting his stride, i would wait until he pitches against cleveland, detroit, texas (when they decide to start hitting), and the yankees again. After he gets rattled, i think he'll lose his stride again. The one thing he does have going for him is that he actually pitched a whole season last year. Maybe his arm is getting stronger. Who knows. i would just wait before you anoint him the savor.
