the leafs are up there, but definitely not the highest paid team... that honour goes to the new york rangers... and i think detroit is second... but yeah... we should have more to show for the amount of money we pay... if we only had a decent defenceman..

i think roberts had a strong series though..

No no... The Leafs are making the most $$$ out of any team in the NHL. They have more money to throw around and they're not using it... it's like they're putting their money into savings account instead of using that money to invest in great players. NYR are using their money (but not doing a good job with it), and so is Detroit, but the Leafs are not when they could.

umm...you are totally wrong.

what do you call bringing in nolan? signing sundin, resigning roberts, offering a shitload to cujo...

they are not as tight with their money as they were in years past, but i think ppl have learned from the rangers' mistake. you cant just go out and spend 60-70 million and expect to have a winning team! heck, the rangers didnt even make the playoffs!

they just need to be smart with the money. going out and buying defenceman, instead of washed up forwards and soft d.

there is a difference between spending money like a madman, and spending money wisely...

steve.

You obviously didn't read my first post because if you did then you would know that I mentioned Sundin, and Nolan. I also mention they should be trying to get good Defence. Why would you think that i'm just saying that the Leafs should go out and spend it like a Madman and not use it wisely??? What i'm saying is that they have the $$ to get good players, but instead they're just fucking around and hardly making attempts to get them when those players become free agents. The Cujo thing is ok because we got Belfore instead, so i'm not disappointed, but it seems like Cujo and Nolan were the only players they really tried for. Sundin has been there for years and Roberts too now, so that was a given with the resigning. Point is Leafs have alot of $$$$, and when players, specifically defencemen, become available, they should try as hard as they can to get them instead of pretending likes it's not a big deal.

wtf you talking about? mike keenan traded linden and muckalt for bertuzzi and mccabe. quinn only signed messier as a free agent. i also thank him a lot for bringing naslund in for alec stojanov. now thats a STEAL!

quinn is a great GM and coach. the problem with him though is he tends to believe grouping a bunch of big buck players will help him take it to the next level but it doesn't always work. only detroit, colorado and dallas have pulled it off properly. we saw it first hand in vancouver too a few years back when we have like the top 5 payroll in the NHL. remember the bure, mogilny duo? it never worked out like how sakic and forsberg are. its all about chemistry and the leafs have NONE of that.

you leaf fans and the media are demanding way too much. they made the 7th game of the east finals last year only to be beat by an EXTREMELY HOT goalie. why didn't they just leave the team the way it was? instead, the fans and media pushed and pressured quinn into making all these moves. adding so many OLD and injured players like gilmour, housley and wesley only hurt team chemistry that they have found over the course of the year.

i actually liked the nolan deal. you need a power forward like him to win. look at what bertuzzi is doing for the canucks now. unfortunately for you guys, he was playing hurt. the wesley deal was alright. however, the 2 other major deals i felt was highly unnecessary.

also, the canucks lost in the first round in 2001 and 2002. how many changes have we made since those years? very little. even then, most were made EARLY in the season so the group of players can gel as a team.

whoever said dump and chase don't work, well i disagree. against a trapping team like philly, you have to dump and chase. you expect to rag the puck through the neutral zone trap into their blueline? LOL. the blues forced the canucks to dump and chase and we adjusted accordingly. we took it in 7.

anyway, i never liked the leafs. with the way things are going, i doubt the leafs are going to win anything for a very very long time.

You are wrong on this, because the Leafs DO try harder than most teams to acquire talent. We do offer more money than most teams but a lot of American players don't want to play in Canada. And when we do have a chance to make a trade, the first name that any team wants is either Antropov or Kaberle, and so the deal is immediately off the table.
I really hope that we don't trade away Antropov because if you ever see him play live, you'll know why every team wants this kid, he's 6'6 and just towers over everyone else on the ice and has lots of skill as well. He never really reached his full potential because he never really played a full season because he's always hurt. Antropov is going to be a major star in this league one day. As for Kaberle.........please continue reading.

The problem with the leafs is that hockey is a business. The Leafs make more money than any other team in the league and they "don't have to " go out and spend the money because they know that we will still go to the games no matter what. It's the leafs fans who should be blamed for all this. You can't really blame the management for trying to run a business. But imagine if all the Toronto fans got tired from years of being treated like crap by the Leafs and stop going to support them, watch how fast the Leafs will spend and win the cup.

However with that being said, I do think that Leafs fans are way too demanding. The leafs HAVE been willing to spend money recently and had made some decent pitches to acquire talent. They did make a solid effort to acquire Tony Amonte, Blake and others. However the problem with them is that they didn't want to play with the Leafs, etiher to be closer to their home and family or whatever. It's not our fault that we didn't get guys like Amonte, he never wanted to play here (imagine how good he would look in a leafs jersey). And remember, we also had serious talks with Lindros because he only wanted to play for the Leafs and nobody else. I think there's a lot that we don't know about the deal and a lot of it had to do with the fact that bobby clarke wanted to stick it to Lindros by not letting the deal through.
I don't care what anybody says but I fucking hate Kaberle I still can't believe all it would've toke to get Lindros was trading away Kaberle and Markov, but again, I bet there's lots of things that we don't know about this deal.

Bottom line is we are pretty lucky that we now have ownership that is commited to winning. A lot of other teams don't even bother to make big moves and when the leafs do, we criticize them to death.
