I loved Oakenfold in 2001 - I think I started to dislike him around the time one of my friends told me how much she loved Oakenfold and how her favourite track was Starry Eyed Surprise... Plus I think Bunkka did it for a lot of people, in 2002.

I think a lot of us don't feel like he is in touch with his fans, that's all. That's saying nothing about his mixing skill (which is incredibly high, I'll admit). Obviously, if he isn't in touch with the fans then his track selection won't be great. That's why I'm not that interested. I don't think it's "cool" to hate him for no reason, in fact I encourage anyone who likes his tracks to go to this. I won't be in attendance, though.

progressive djs such as sander k, burridge and howells are considered underground djs and even though they're big in that scene, they do not get as much commercial exposure as do jules and oakie... and it is exactly that scene that brings about all the flamers and haters... and jules is this big only because he's got so many huge commercial labels behind him pushing their releases... otherwise there is no way he would have made it this far... jules has nothing on oakie, absolutely nothing...

although i hated bunkka too, i'm glad he made that bold step forward in reuninting the hip hop scene with the now evolved "rave" scene... if you look at the roots of electronic music, you'll see how in the 80s hip hop and electronica were sooo closely linked and all rave parties included both hip hop artists and electronica... its the gangsta rap of the early-mid 90s that has separated the two and pushed electronica deeper undeground and commercialized hip hop...

the two belong together, and theres nothing i'd wanna see more than electronica commercialized... i'd rather see house/trance producers rewarded for their work than lets say britney and aguilera... and i dunno about you, but i'm sick of seeing/hearing pop stars on tv/radio and would love to be able to turn on the tv/radio and see/hear some house/trance sets and see videos of parties and so on... but thats a whole other topic that has already been beaten to death... heh

People are hating on Oakenfold because of his recent commercial success. The same people who hate him, are the same people posting over and over about how they heard a PVD track (or whatever) on Z103. Commercial popularity or success shouldnt determine whether or not you like a dj, its the music they play, and the level in which they mix it. Im not a big Oakie fan to start with, but would agree with others that his stuff in '99,'00,'01 was a lot better than the stuff ive heard recently.

I have to add that I am surprised how many people disliked Oakeys set last year at guv. I was sober for the most part and thought it was amazing.

I find myself defending his style more and more over the years. Oakenfold is not a dj you listen to once and love. His style has to grow on you. This dj mixes shit other djs wouldnt even dare to touch. He can take many different style tracks and bring them all together as one amazing beat along with his trade mark flat heavy bass line.

I cant fkn wait.

Oakey, Oakey.........

any my turn to say what i think after waiting to hear both sides.
My turn to say what i think: it seems to me like a DJ/producer is only good when they're underground but once they become commercial, it's all over for them. It's like as if they crossed to the other side!

someone brought up the fact that PVD was on z103 the other day even though that's a first.
U guys have to realize those DJs need to connect to the commercial world so they can see what ppl like and don't like. It can also help ur name as a DJ if ur productions are selling well in the commercial world. For example lets take my fav example of them all: Scot Project.
His rmxs and productions sell but he's not the best when it comes to DJing yet he gets booked.
Commercial or not, it shouldn't change the way u feel about a certain person cuz they're doing it not only to help themselves but to help the scene.

On the other hand, sometimes djs/producers become complete sellouts once they start releasing stuff in the commercial world... i doubt this has been the case with Oakie

I don't mean to unleash with any flaming here, but please know what you're talking about before you talk about it. Oakenfold has been a pillar in the industry, there's no doubt about that. But his mixing, well there are hundreds, maybe thousands, who can do better than he.
And to imply that Carl Cox can't hold a torch to Oakey technically is absolute ignorance. Horseshit in fact. Carl Cox mixes seamlessly and regularly on three, even four, yes four, decks. Oakey can only manage to work the crossfader between two decks (ie. shamefully short mixes). I won't go into more details, and save the poor guy some pride.
