You were able to see bitrates if you clicked on the filename on the search page, rather than just queueing it with the little satellite icon. I don't think there was a way to get it from the same ripper, tho.

AG was my favorite, mainly because I hate these programs that take up so many of my system resources and slow down everything. AG never did that, it didn't flash lots of annoying ads at me, and it rarely froze.

Now I do all of my filesharing thru AIM. I've got enough friends that do heavy downloading that I don't need to anymore.

Back when Napster was around I would have said that. But then when Napster went down and Audiogalaxy was around, damn was that a good program. So AG gets my vote.

You obviously don't understand the application for DC hubs.. they are meant to propogate files throughout a *small* community. WinMX, KaZaa, and eMule are all designed for massive file sharing, hence the multi-part downloads, queue's etc. This stuff isn't really practical however when you have ... 400 people on a network. KaZaa and WinMX in particular are pigs..

good luck finding any *semi* rare files on a huge network like kazaa/winmx, 2 things are working against you. For starters, the search methodology for those 2 programs makes it so a lot of information can easily be overlooked (kazaa in particular) meaning you might not even find a file, even though it existed and was being shared by quite a few people, and chances are, if you *do* find it, the people that do have it are going to have full queue's from other, more common files. eMule solves this problem entirely by giving rare files a queue push and using a server search method. The protocol itself however has tons of overhead, tends to be clunky (high latency between transactions) and really rapes your connection (usues a lot of incoming/outgoing connections up).

DC++ OTOH offers very easy access to rare files (communities/hubs) the search and transfer protocols also have practically no overhead, AFAIK there isn't really a queue implementation so it also bypasses the 'huge wait' for the most part. The downside is no multi source transfers (which is basically leaching anyway) which makes transfers usually a magnitude or so slower.

anyways, for sharing music i'll have to agree AG was the best.. i loved groups.. plus the web based interface rocked.

1) audiogalaxy (man I was in my classroom, and spend whole the time searching and queuing tracks in it, so if I came home I just had to connect, best prog for sure)
2) direct connect (best atm)
3) Soulseek (good for livesets)
