wow.. glad this went from a simple "your music sucks and this is king" thread into an insiteful, somewhat more thought provoking one. I have a lot less to offer having been following this scene for a lot shorter time (2 years maybe). Being in a very much more hip-hop/pop region of the US though has made me appreciate the music more than the elitist crowd, I think, and made me more open to more ideas. About all we really got here back when I first heard any electronic music limited me mainly to pop-techno/trance/house tunes, and it wasn't until I heard stuff from the '99 oakey world tour that I realized "holy shit there's a whole lot more to this stuff than I ever imagined." I must agree that the genre-shifting and blurring of defined lines between styles is a good thing, as said it gets more music out to more people and paves the way for some real revolution or at least evolution in the styles. To me though late 2000 through most of '01 was a hodgepodge of blah. I think it is what opened the door to this blending of lines and made possible a lot more lesser-known producers and dj's to get name recognition. Now mid '02 through the first half of '03 is seeing some stellar tracks and allowing dj's to play with more variety. Great for the scene in general, because we all know what happens when a genre becomes stagnant. (Anyone remember what happened to hair bands in the late '80's? They all died off since they were all playing the same songs, just different keys and lyrics.) It seems to me that the uprising of fresh talent is what is going to keep dance music in general alive in the coming few years, and since they grew up having more influences than people 5 years ago, the lines will continue to shift/blur. I just hope that it doesn't become so blurred that you can't figure out what to listen to and just get so frustrated by a great set/cd ruined by a few tracks of COMPLETELY unrelated music. I mean it's quite jarring to the groove of the set when you hear a ferry tune, then an armin tune, then 50cent, then marco. heh
All that aside though, I'm still pretty much a trancer at heart, but prog has evolved to a state that I won't immediately turn off, techno to the point that I can't help but want to move, and house is still banging, but boring over long periods of time. A lot of my getting into all of it now instead of just one thing is this shift/blur of lines simply making everything more enjoyable, you can mix sets up with different styles and not lose the "feel" of the overall set. IMO, we're going in the right direction, I just hope people don't take it too far.
