There are those who support electronica music, and those who don't.

And I'm proud to say I'm a supporter.

I'm open to all genre's as most of you are, however if there's one selection that creates "the vibe" or more or less brings out the inner "me" would have to be electronica music, I'm sure most of you who have experienced these types of things when you're first introduced into electronica music would know what I'm talking about, or you can call me crazy.

i think music is one of the best things about life, period. i have loved music since the day i was born and it has always been an important part of who i am in a variety of ways. the last few years, i have been totally captivated by electronic music, learning more and more about it, and loving it even more.

i think electronic music is awesome. it as an art, like any other "good" music. i say good because some music is just shit.... but good is not up to me to decide, its up to any person who knows and cares for music. the great thing about electronic music is that it allows for a creativity DIFFERENT from any other form. someone mentioned radiohead.... im glad you did, they are an AWESOME fuckin band. and i mean truly mindblowing, amaaaaazing band. but part of their late creativity and intensity comes from learning to use electronic music into their own. they shocked the world when releasing Kid A, and showed how talented and creative they really were - not some random poppy rock band from britain known for the song "creep". this is just one example as to why electronic music making lends itself a DIFFERENT kind of creativity that is not achievable through other music. all music has the power/potential to sweep you off your feet.... electronic music removes the bounds and makes the room for novelty and creativity INFINTE.

dJohn...dont act so overpowering of your intellect and knowledge of "HIP-HOP" I do live in North America and i have watched so many "IT" music genres crash to the ground. I am very aware of music and the cultures that surround most of them. Although I don’t live in a very big urban center and I don’t radiate that I know everything…too me the music that reaches the masses, hip-hop (or rap as you said is passé now to communicate to others) for instance is bleak dry and boring right now. Disco went out, Grunge went out, Dance went out…and I believe rap is next to be suffering a downfall. Hip Hop culture has been pre-packaged and sent around the globe and has become a cultural phenomenon. Which is great because more people are exposed to a new style of music…but when all the corners of the globe only get the cheap shitty rap what happens, the genre turns stagnant and looses what is had and the message that was supposed to come with it. Back in the early 80’s to 90’s rap was unique and thought provoking….2 Pac, Public Enemy, and so forth had things to say and presented the world with a view of life in urban hell.

My point is I have listened to rap for 10 years now…and I have seen its progression…and to only think I listen to trance is very ignorant on your part, as I have listened to many different styles since I was born. Hip Hop culture I despise and mainstream “Beyonce featuring Jay Z” I hate not because I wont listen to it…but because its gottan out of hand. You have N Sync joining up with Nelly to make money. And my problem is its all about money in North America (as it is all over the world) and when you take a good thing and exploit the hell out of it and I have Wiggers walking all over the place claming their hardcore and gangster I think there’s a problem. That’s my opinion living here in North America…where a white rapper can win an Oscar and his fellow artists before him never got any recognition for paving the way. I just wish people were exposed to more in North America like in Europe it seems its more vast in it’s what’s hot and what’s not…

ffs let ppl listen to whatever they want to and dont say this genre is the and this the worst..your favourite genre will change with time anyway.. you can´t listen straight 3 years to uplifting trance you need some other music, too believe me.. But I think trance has the biggest mp3 community every track get ripped... you can´t say that about drum n bass or oldschool or something!! but buy some vinyls there is so much great music out there more than just trance (trance is my favourite genre thought)

i cant understand how ppl can listen to hip-hop or rap thought But if they want to listen to this shit.. Why not ??

There's a lot to chew on here, and a couple of things I feel the need to respond to.

First off, the myth that "possibilities of electronic music are endless" as opposed to acoustic instruments. That arguement's been used over and over to sell synths since the DX7 in '82. Bull. A DX7 just sounds like a DX7, a filtered sawtooth sounds like a filtered sawtooth, a 303 with distortion sounds like a 303 with distortion, etc. It's the arrangements and especially the MIX that makes each production sound unique, and that applies to any set of instruments in any genre. For example, an acoustic guitar in a Simon and Garfunkel song sounds very different from an acoustic guitar in a Jewel song, the same way Euro kicks and Goa kicks sound very different though they're both kicks.

Regarding how long electronic music's been around, keep in mind that it was originally called Electroacoustic Composition and it was the property of university teachers and Serious Composer-type geeks. Think of those black-and-white interviews from the 60's with some scary bearded guy standing in front of a wall-sized machine "Many composers won't accept electronic computer music, perhaps because they're afraid of it. BEEEEEEEP BLIP BLIP BLIP BLIP BLIP BLEEEEP" Then came Kraftwerk and disco in the 70s and the rest is history. So it's weird to see ultra-hip music come from a background like this.

As far as which has been around longer, EDM or hip hop, that's hard to say. One culture can be traced back to Levin and Knuckles, the other back to Kool Herc, all of whom started around the early 70's, and the prototypes go even earlier.

by electronic music, i for one was not speaking of one electronic device.... yes the possibilities ARE relatively unlimited to other music. because electronic music, encompasses a lot more than the sound of one synth. you have your hardware, you have your software, you have your effects and in all this, there is so much room to change the sound. obviously, in this day almost all music takes advantage of electronics and computers.... but the possibility of alterartion and creation of sound lies in the electronic side of music. those in other genres that have redefined sound are almost always using the same types of techniques in electronic music.

note- electronic music is a much larger categorization than electronic DANCE music, which is a kind of music under EM.
