Mooi man

DJ Remy is considered one of most popular DJ's in Europe. His indescribable sound hit Holland and crossed the borders. There is almost no European city Remy didn't play. His musical style is popular in varied scenes. Wherever he plays, he can create an sphere, you only understand after witnessing! Justin from New York, got the change to meet him. On November 17th, Remy was invited to play at Twilo for the first time. A few hours before Remy started, Justin met Remy...
Remy's style is difficult to describe. "A lot of people want to have a name for something. They like progressive or they like techno. I think that's narrow minded, short sighted. I play everything, as long as it is not cheesy or aggressive." You can call Remy's style tech-trance or whatever, it's a fact that his sound is successfully picked up by the progressive scene. "I think it has a kind of a progressive feeling, but it is not really progressive. It has a little bit of techno influence in it, a little bit tribal or whatever. I think a lot of people like it, because it crosses over a lot of area's."
Remy distinguishes himself by doing his own thing. "One important thing is that I am playing the Dutch way. We always play a lot of different styles. I just do what I like. To do your own thing, is what makes a DJ special. If people don't like it, I try to play music they like, but most important is to like it myself. If they really don't like anything I play, I quite Djing."
We don't have to be afraid that will happen. Besides his successful DJ sets, DJ's like Digweed, Sasha to some commercial DJ's, everyone play his productions. "I can be found on a lot of compilations with some of my tracks and some of those compilations are very commercial, but it's nice to hear I am accepted in a lot of scenes. A lot of people are feeling ashamed when they make a big hit. I don't mind, because it is music I love to make and it is nice that a lot of people like it and yeah, it makes money."
A few weeks ago Remy played at the 'I love Techno' event in Belgium, tonight at Twilo, in December he was the closing DJ at Awakenings (Amsterdam) and he will play between Paul van Dyk and Sven Väth at the Holland's biggest indoor festival Innercity. Actually you can expect Remy everywhere. With this kind of varied parties it is sometimes difficult to plan a set. "Most of the time I just take too many records. I just see what I'm going to do. As for Innercity, Paul and Sven, I know the styles of those two men. They play totally different. Both are very energetic. I think I'm a good bridge between these two DJ's." (latest news is that Remy will finish the night at the mainstage at Innercity because Sven Vath has to play at his own night in Frankfurt so he will play earlier).
Remy started Djing about ten years ago. "Together with my older brothers I went to Club Roxy, the place to be in Amsterdam at that time. I was young, but they took me in. I didn't know what to expect. The godfather of the House in Holland was playing. His name is Eddy the Clercq. After listening to his music, I was staggered…"
Very soon Remy bought two turntables and records and started mixing. He got his own residency at Club Roxy. This residency gave him more opportunities. "A lot of promoters went there. Actually they were the reason why I quitted playing at the Roxy. They wanted to have me at a lot of parties and in many countries. I could not play as frequent as they wanted, so I quitted."
Soon Remy made a move to producing. First on the Belgium Wonka label and after that he founded the 'Global Cuts' label together with Sven van Hees. In 1994 Remy started his own Label 'Taste Recordings' and two years later the label 'Area Code 070' was launched. "Taste is really me. The last four releases have been me. The main reason I put a track on 'Taste' is that it's really music I like to play. 'Area Code 070' is more experimental."
Last year Remy finished his own recording studio. His plans for the next few years are Djing and producing. "I really love to do it both. In the way it's going right now is perfect! Spending three days a week at the studio and playing during the weekends. It's important as a DJ to make your own music. When I am in the studio making tracks I have to play them. I cannot imagine that only other DJ's play it!"
Remy has produced tracks with Dutch producers like Roland Klinkenberg and Gregor van Gaalen. But there are more producers who inspire him and he would love to work with. For example the German guy Olivier Lieb, the British 16B or the Americans Hip-E and Halo. "But the nicest project will be with Nick Muir and John Digweed. Nick is a really nice guy. I met him a few times at Bedrock and did a remix for him. I think this will be a good project."
John Digweed invited Remy twice at his successful Bedrock night at Heaven in London. Thanks to these nights, Remy plays tonight at Twilo. "I think the Bedrock thing was really important. Mike Bindra, manager here, heard me playing at Bedrock and asked me to play at Twilo. I think it is getting started in the States right now, some other bookings are coming up."
Remy brought plenty of records, although he knows, he might not even use all the records. "I don't really know what to expect from this night. I think it is going to be a good night. The club really looks nice and the sound system sounds really good."
Remy's night at Twilo was a big success. Saturday morning Justin sent us an email with the words: "REMY WAS FUCKING AMAZING!! VERY TECHY!! I LOVED IT!"
DJ Remy will be back at Twilo next year. If you get the chance, go and see him!
