Well..

I have a Powerbook G4 ti, and a desktop PC, and I only use the PC for music making. This may seem a little bit strange to some people, but it honestly is easier. For starters, there are MUCH more VSTs/DXi's being produced for windows. Have you ever tried finding free plugins for mac? There aren't many. Also, a lot of third party software is PC only (for example bZone, which controls my sampler). On top of that, my Powerbook doesn't have a SCSI interface, which is essential to me for SMDI transfers to my sampler. I have all the software I need to make tunes on my mac (Logic 6, Cubase SX, Reason, V-Station etc) and I do occasionally do stuff on it while on the move, but PC is superior, IMO.

Don't listen to people that say 'Mac is industry standard, its far better etc...'. That's crap. If you are building a setup from scratch, and you are relatively new to production, then PC every time. If you have loads of money to throw about, then by all means buy a G5, but you really won't benefit that much unless you have tons of cash to spend on plugins etc.

i grew up on a pc.. hated macs, used to talk the shit like you do now.. then just for kicks, i got a mac to really see if it was all it was made out to be... it was.. i cant really put a finger on it, but it just makes life easy...

i do networking and maintenance as a dayjob, and hate windows.. all versions, tho 2000 pro seems to be the most solid so far...

to each his own though in the long run, and hey if pc works better for ya go for it, but i tell ya from personal experience that life has gotten easier for me and many others when i switched...

yea, more vsts are out for pc, but big deal, you dont need 15 softsynth virtual analogs...

i'll post a different perspective...from the software perspective...macs is definitely better. yes there are more free stuff out there for pcs, but going by professional standards, mac is better.

i'll break it down a lil:
Digital Performer 4 - only for mac and best midi sequencer out there
Logic Platinum 6- industry standard for audio, only for mac.
Cubase Nuendo and SX - pc-based, nuendo is very pro-quality.
ProTools - versions for both, but really made to run on macs. a PT HD or TDM system is amazing.
Reason - made for both, but compared to the big boys, it's total crap.

anyway you look at it, while software for pcs is catching up, the bulk of it is still for macs. and yes i kno lots of tunes are made on reason and fruity and cubase sl, but honestly...the quality from those programs cannot compare to a professionally-made track in logic or protools.

I don't get it. Why are the main software apps the reason "Mac is so much better than PC" when a softsynth vsti sounds the same whether its played on a PC or Mac, FL Logic or CB? Software is software.

And there is great hardware for either system, but unless you're willing to doll out your entire paycheck on a multi-thousand dollar Mac soundcard, it really doesnt matter (although I still haven't met anyone who can actually give me a reason mac is so superior hardware wise... disregarding the whole $$$ factor all together)

Give Mozart a blowtickler and a wooden paddle and he'll still beat the pants off Brittany Spears any day (gay or not, hehe).

Oh... and Mac OS and Linux are both Unix man... why would you ever waste your time attempting a Linux studio? I think you like pain. Sadistic bastard.

Yah, I meant why use Linux when OS x is the same but with more compatibility and less pain.

HI!..

I must say I love mac's but the only thing keeping me avay is the price.. I would love to get the new duall cpu g5 , duall monitor setup. But it's too much money for me. Considering the technology moves forward so quickly, and computer cpu's become absolute after 2 years.. Intel estimates that in the next 6 years cpu speeds will reach aproximeatly 10-20 gigahertz. Right now I am running p4 2.66ghz with 2gig ram, and 2x120 7200rpm HD and 2x 19inch monitors. I am sure the G5 is super fast and it's does look great. But going to the apple website i priced a simmilar configuration to the one i have right now. except the mac would be a bit faster... it came up to about $8,716.00 and than add 15% tax to this.. Well that's a lot of cash for a computer.. I am not making my money of the music so it's eaven harded to justify the price tag.. And considering I got a great deal of getting my intel cpu and the ram from the place i work at.. the price of my entire system is not eaven 1/3 the price of the mac I priced out. So Yep I love mac's and i would like to have one, but for the price i sure rather get myself 2 nice hardware synths as additions to my studio.. I have a studio only computer, no games or net, it's strictly for music, and i don't have crashes that people constantly complain about.. It all depends how you set the thing up and what hardware you have. I am not saying that pc's are better for example.. they are just cheaper. Computer is just a machine, without us humans it's not gonna make a killer trance track : ). And mac's and pc's came a long way from before. Some people swear by either platform. I am just a pc user that chose to save some money.. And i can't say that I am limited by the computer I am using right now. It's plenty of power for what I do...
