Go ask any big time prog dj ask them what do you play 90% of the time they will say its Progressive .. not progressive house, progressive trance . Personaly its all trance lovers who really dont listen to prog that call prog trance. Progressive is a vibe and mood setting a track portrays thats why progresive can enquire styles of trance, house, tribal, breaks, tech, etc and still be progressive because the track still brings out a progressive vibe. I see many tracks you guys labeled as prog trance..and personally many of Trance listeners will call certain tracks progressive but in all honesty its trance not prog. So when a track isnt really a epic trance track with the melodies and uplifting buildups you call it prog but not all trance is uplifting and melodic but it doesnt mean its progressive. You will never see a true prog dj say i spin prog trance if he does he doesnt know what hes talking about.
So ill say it again and some of you might be confused but ask people who are prog djs for a while and prog listeners for a while... PROG IS PROG!!! its all the same some just more deeper, houseier, trancier, etc
so stop trying to figure out whats prog trance and prog house ..if your a prog listener you listen to prog if your trance listen to trance plain and simple! |
I am mainly doing this because people interpet progressive trance differently and I'd like to see what everyone thinks it is. That's all.

Sit down kiddies, time for a story.
Trance and House were sitting around smoking pot and other such downers, when they decided to fuck. They ended up having the Prog twins. Their slow and mellow bastard children were called Prog House, and Prog Trance, because while part of the SAME DAMN GENRE, they had slight differences.
And the moral is, there is House, there is Trance, and there is Prog. Prog trance and Prog house are subgenres of Prog. Seems kinda weird, but that makes for a much more accurate description, considering how alike they are.

the term progressive shouldn't really be used on its own, its an adjective
people have just started to call the whole prog house and prog trance thing progressive, but infact there are differences just like there are differences between Happy house and Happy hardcore

AMEN Brother!
About the only thing, prog house and prog trance have in common is the phrasing and the beats per min[which isn't even always the case]. Listen to the SOUNDS in the track.
Prog-House generally has a lot more percussion in highs, it's funky(sometimes funkier), it can be sexy, it can be deep, it can be tribal. [EG's Kate Bush vs Infusion - Running up that Hill borders on Tribal Prog House. James Holden - Nothing [Original Mix] is Prog-House. The Greek Feat Stephanie Vezina - Alive is a sexy Prog-House track]
Prog-Trance, hardly ever has lots of highs, and has epic melodies, or is melodic, it doesn't feel sexy at all. Enchanting, but not sexy.
[EG's Sasha - Xpander,Conjure One - Centre Of The Sun (JXL Remix), Dave Gahan - I Need You (G&D Remix)].
In regards to asking a DJ what do they play, and them say "Progressive" I haven't found one prog DJ in Sydney say they play Progressive. In Sydney Progressive is a dirty word. People play pro-tech, tech-house, prog-house, prog-trance. All the interviews I've read in regards to "what do they play", they play what they like is the common answer.
From a production point of view I'd be a bit shitty if someone who knows the difference called a prog-trance track I made prog-house, they use totally different sounds. Personally, I don't like prog-house most of the time (or any of it's sub sub genres/styles), but love prog-trance.
Sydney has a prog-house following, and only about 20-30 guys who like prog-trance. Put on a night of prog-house and it'll do well, put on prog-trance it'll fail (it's been tried before; the night still running [prog-house] is called Sweetchilli).
Yes they can both be called progressive, taking that attitude trance and progressive can both be called "techno" from an outsiders point of view, or EDM from someone being general. Think about it.
