Artists who make goa are IMO "Astral projection", "Man with no name", "MFG", "Chi-A.D". . I guess goa trance is more melodious, more "harmonic", psytrance music uses more twisted sounds, huge effects and crazy distorted sounds. Then some artists make both : "Cosmosis", "Battle of the future Buddhas", "Hallucinogen", for example.
Just compare these tracks :
1 - MFG - "new kind of world" (GOA)
2 - Dimension 5 - "deep space 5D" (GOA)
3 - Neuromotor - "fuck the trance mafia xp" (Psytrance)
4 - Logic bomb - "Halojaner" (Psytrance)
5 - Hallucinogen - "lsd" (GOA)
6 - Hallucinogen - "Shamanix" (between both)
7 - Talamasca - "come on" (psytrance)
8 - Technossomy - "VTOL" (maybe between both, not sure)
i hope i have helped U and all those tranceaddicted i don't claim to be an expert, but i have listened to this music during several years, so... |
I agree with your definition except your examples aren't so great... Talamasca - Come On for example is very melodic as are just about all Talamasca tracks... pure full on goa in my opinion. Psytrance is probably more like, say, Hux Flux (as you mentioned above).
But anyway, in general a fairly accurate simple definition is as follows:
goa : psytrance :: uplifting : progressive

are u sure that "Come on" is melodic? I don't think so, but you are right when you say this is full on, i had forgotten this style of psy, it is so complex personally I think the only "goa" track by Talamasca is a track like "Sinaï" , but i agree that most of them are "full on" tracks, but i think all full on tracks are psytrance tracks, that's my opinion
PS : for everyone who would like to listen to great full on, psytrance, check out Toi doi's album "Technologic"

true, goa / psy is an acquired taste. |
It's weird cause I was FIRST into Psy (3-4 years ago) and then only fell in love with "normal" trance, house and techno. I still listen to some good IM or x-dream tracks here and there but frankly I got sick of it. As complex as it may appear at first, you can get fed up with this relatively small unvaried scene very quickly, unless you actually go to the real underground parties. But for home listening..I don't know. Especially nowadays with all that, in my opnion, fucked up boring minimal tech- psy coming from Scandinnavia and Germany.
As for the heavy Israeli influence, there's a simple logical explanation: Israeli teens at the age of 18 are forced to serve 3 years for the army. Especially those in fighting/troops positions are sure to leave all traumatized and fucked up in the head...So it was that more and more people at the age of 21, 22 needed a "break" and escaped to this old hippie area called GOA. Basically to trip their brains out for several months and start a new life, or "finding themselves". They brought the music back to Israel and worked on it, creating their own style. End of story

I want to add to this ...

Goa is actually a province on the west coast of India, formerly a Portugeuse colony (which contributes to its distinct subculture). For most purposes it doesn't matter what you're calling the music - Goa or psytrance... but if you wanted to be accurate, realize that Goa is specifically the more tribal/ethnic-influenced old school stuff made from 1994 up to 1999 or so (naturally with a few straggler releases outside of that period) whereas psytrance as we know it today is a sort of evolution out of the Goa sound integrating much from techno, 'regular' trance (for lack of a better term), and other genres (house/prog surely included). Composition was the focus of the late 90s, then sound quality took precedence after the turn of the millenium. Nowadays psytrance is some of the finest produced music and would likely surprise those with only a casual interest... its certainly not the blip-bloppy crazy nonsense you may have thought it was. Try an album from artists like Human Blue, Phony Orphants, M.O.S., Antix, Ticon, Magnetrixx, or Vibrasphere. It is unlikely that anyone would consider this the same sound that came out of the mix of cultures found on Goan beaches in the early-90s. |
First of all, there is a a great thread out there that totally sums up the terms "goa" and "psy", and it was done couple years ago, dont have a link ... I have to add that "Psytrance" was developed in Israel in mid-90s from Goa, where Goa was earlier (in late 80s/early 90s) revived and expanded, introduced to the rest of the world, and some of the greatest goa/psy names originated from Israel. And YES, Goa is a province in India, that was once a Portuguese colony, and if I remember correctly, in 1962 Indian army took over it.
I love goa/ psytrance, I more of a goa fan though. My favourite artists include:
MFG
Astral Projection
Hallucinogen
Infected Mushroom
X-Dream
Yahel
Man With No Name
Infinity Project
