in a popularity contest, would you expect the number 1 person to be the most popular, or have the best technique?

He's like a pop star, the face of the trance culture or whatever you wanna call it. So take it easy on him, being the number 1 is about image in front of the people, attitude toward the people, interaction with the people. And I think Tiesto's sets are very emotional and he interacts well with the crowd, that's why people like him. DJing is an art, not engineering. Sorry to disappoint those who think that if they can mix better than Tiesto then they should be ranked higher in the Top 100.

wrong. the number 1 DJ is determined by who has the greatest global presense. Yes, with this comes the popularity factor, so some of what you were saying at the beginning of your post I agree with. But at the end of the day, if your willing to put in the time and effort to tour, you will win simple as.

btw I actually thought Tiesto's set last night was proper ace. And I havn't said this about Tiesto since Qontact 2001 so believe me this is rare of me to say He interacted with the crowd, he was creative (his spinback from Praiseworthy Tunes (Hoi Polloi Mix) into Riley & Durant - Candesco whilst keeping completely in key blew me away,) and although a workman should never blame his tools he did have some problems with the monitors for part of his set.

I still agree with your post the UWM. I would like to see a real DJ compeition where the results are based on talent and not popularity.

In a Tiesto's interview Tijs explained that in many gigs the crowd go only to see him for a question of prestige (ow I've seen Tiesto!!) not for the music so as many ppl have said in this thread and as Tijs says (idirectly) being the number 1 is a question of popularity not of the mixing quality. However he is one of the bests for me.

hum.. the mixing isn't brilliant, sounds like there's something wrong with it during the whole mix. but is it that bad?

and for mixing up different styles, wtf i though that was a good thing. even if i think his trackselection is kinda cheesy and sometimes even sounds like he plays it in random order, what in hell is wrong with mixing prog, uplifting, hard trance and techno?

not trying to defend tiesto, i'm not exactly the biggest fan of him and there's loads of dj's who'd deserve more the #1 position but he isn't the biggest pile of shit neither.

This mixing is some of the worst I have ever heard. Apparently beatmatching, cueing, and general skill of any sort are not required at large festivals. I mean, you're raking in 30k Euros for a gig, why try?

Another thing - when you can't even mix into / out of your own track, maybe you should stop and think - those 13 vodka / red bulls actually didn't improve my performance!

I'll end my rant now, as we've come to commercial...

...Thank God.

yup. and people say i bash him just for the sake of it?

there you go

If you want true skills, look at DJ's like Hype, Sy, Producer (you probably don't know of these cos they don't all play sounds that appeal, but those guys can mix scratch cut fade, do everything that dj's like tiesto & deep dish would be so jealous of, but they just don't whore the publicity)

Yeah exactly. Skill=Hype, Andy C, Marky, Q-Bert, Mixmaster Mike and all those scratch and dnb double drop trick in your face djs that are underrepresented in that list. So for global presence and appeal to the scenes around the world that are in the know in terms of dance music, it's all about Tiesto, PvD and co. Skill comes to play marginally.

Wow, I'm rather surprised at Mikey . And yes, those kinds of in-key mixing layouts as the one you mentioned make Tiesto experiences much more enjoyable and special because they activate overtones in the musical flow that enhance listening. Maybe I should download this set after all.

Anyway, is it true he was wearing a Vandit shirt?

Whats really sad is that Lange got #51. Not that, that is especially high but the man cannot even beatmatch properly. Hes only been spinning for a couple of years!

I think the reason Im picking on him is because he's right up from hybrid who are amazing and deserve a much higher rank.
