Okay there's a top 20 of sorts... it's kinda modified, and I used only trance tracks to make it a bit easier but it's something to work with. My tastes are quite varied. I'm a sucker for melodic trance, especially work from Dutch artists around the turn of the century, but more subtle, driving stuff can win me over too. I also tend to value good production quality; if something sounds amateury chances are I won't like it. I also like old tracks, the older the better. I'm often not very up to date on new trance but I love hunting down old stuff. Having said all that you don't have to limit yourself to trance as I love lots of other stuff -- prog house, techno, breaks, whatever. Laughingfennec, I'm your competitor so to speak. HOW TO SPEED THINGS UP

What I was thinking, instead of the THUMBS UP and THUMBS DOWN thing, go with a rating system:

1 = winner, end round
2 = almost but not quite (I'm a picky bastard)
3 = I never want to hear this crap again

Then limit the number of attempts you can make to find the other guy a song to 10 attempts. If no rating 1 song is found before try 10, for either apponent, then you do a count back of the rating numbers. (HEARD BEFOREs need to be resent because you need a number for each of the 10 parts of the duel in the event of a count back).

Example:

What do ya reckon? Up to you guys. Maybe something we could use after the first round if it's taking far too long. It's all I could come up with to make it go faster. Sought of reduces the purity of the thing but at least it allows you to see the end.

Btw, if the count back turns out to be equal then I'm afraid it's pistols at dawn time.

As you're probably able to see, I'm very much into pre 99 stuff which may make it harder.

95-98 Trance/Progressive Trance/Progressive House/Epic House: Qattara, Amethyst, Big C, Andy Ling, Evolution, Forth, Das Trix, Fade, Dekkard, Yum Yum, Space Brothers (all aliases), Disco Citizens, X Cabs/DeNiro, Heliotropic, Grace, Way Out West, Trouser Enthusiasts, Tarrentella, Domionion, Danny Howells "Squelch" productions, Shango, X-Avia, Tomski, Eddy Fingers, Bedrock (Set In Stone, Forbidden Zone, remixes), Merlyn & Chuck Mellow, Nalin & Kane, Three 'N' One etc.

The above illustrates my favourite style but obviously that's not all. When the "anthem" formula in trance which is now commonly reffered to as "cookie cutter" started to really take off in 1998, and it seemed like something relatively fresh, I enjoyed many tracks back then. Particularly artists like Matt Darey, Lucid, Signum, Ferry Corsten, Benno De Goeij productions etc. Nowadays however, I find there to be way too many uninspiring and boring "anthem" tracks which are just lame attempts at trying to immitate that 1999 sound.

So, if my tastes are mainly stuff that lies in the past, I can't be searching the past forever. What do I like now?
Well, when it comes to new releases I can't really say there's one style I like in particular above others. Progressive House/Trance from the likes of Markus Schulz, Chab, Luke Chable, Van Bellen, James Holden, Steve Porter etc. is what I probably get into most these days. However, a good uplifting production with a twist that's different from the one big synth driven, cookie cutter rubbish that seems so common these days is always highly welcome. I admire Greg Murray, Hemstock & Jennings, Mr Sam and Solar Stone for keeping the "uplifting" sound alive without making it sound overly repetitive, cliched and cheesy. Also do like "good" vocals in tracks, and on occasion, an excellent vocal performance can save a mediocre/bad track for me.

What I hate?
Well, it's all pretty much been said previously but a short description. Lame, amatuerish attempts to immitate the 1999 sound. Artists who never evolve and produce for years witht the same sound. Overly loud and cheesy synths. I hate Svenson & Gielen in particular, as they break both of the above rules. A lot of Ferry Corsten's recent remixes, like his awful remix of Corderoy - Sweetest Dreams.

It's becoming a bit too much of an essay about my music tastes but I think you get the point.

I like everything, and anything that is hard, driving, energetic, and uplifting. And I also like alot of emotional and chill-out tunes aswell. As long as the tune can get grasp me from the beginning, I usually dig it.
