The only girls I know who seem to appreciate non-vocal music as much as vocal music are the girls I know in my youth orchestra, which is about half men and half women. Unfortunately they only really listen to classical.

I have a female friend who is an excellent Progressive House DJ. She's a little low on the self-confidence though and often passes up opportunities to play out. I'm wondering if maybe girls get intimidated by the fact that in mainstream culture, talent without good looks often goes unappreciated, and they think that also translates into the DJ culture.

As far as DJ's go I also think that girls on the dancefloor like to be led by a man..I am not sexist, its just the way of dancing. You waltz, the man leads...you dance to electronica, the man leads. Now I know this sounds like a lot of shit...but its the way I see it. I know/ have PLayed with some really good female DJ's who are as good as any male DJ...but they struggle to get werk because although they may draw groups of guys to clubs...they dont bring in many chicks...and therefore you get a club full of guys...which of course doesnt werk...unless its a gay club

No I am not sexist...and some of my favourite DJ's of all time (Misstress Barbara and Sister Bliss) are women...its just they way I see it.

Anyway to the subject- I don't think its the need for vocals...not for me anyway, though I do appreciate a good vocal track.
Take Sasha for example,I can't get enough and I do believe every original production of his I've heard is devoid of a vocalist.

ive noticed that too, alot of males everywhere on the floor and less girls. and it suks to see that theres never any single girls on the dance floor, theyre always taken.

everyone is bringing up some very good points.

Culture these days seems to be truly based around MTV, and when was the last time you heard trance on MTV? We may here one cheesey techno track in a blue moon, but that's it. MTV is hot, it's sexy, it's what people want to base their lives around, it's what's cool and what all good young people should try to be. Not to sound sexist, but I think many guys (and of course the girls that actually do like trance) are a little more non-conformist, and try to get away from this model. In doing so, we discover the amazing world of trance

As for seeing girls at clubs, it seems that when many girls go out "clubbing", they're not going for the music, they're going for the atmosphere. They want a fun nightlife, with lots of young hip people that match the MTV cookie cut-out. They don't find this at trance parties, though, but rather at hip-hop clubs, and at best, maybe some house.

Also, girls may want faces behind the names. All of these "DJs" may sound like they're just a bunch of nerds who could never make it big and get on tv. 50 cent, ludacris, etc, have their names out there. But for djs, they're not doing it to get their names and faces on tv, which is what females may want.

The entire electronic music scene, seems to be, like it has an almost "nerdy" connotation to it. In the minds of many, it's created behind a computer by people who don't want to perform in front of a live crowd, etc. Females don't want this, they want music to be made and song for them, from people with confidence.

With time, hopefully this will all change, and trance music will get the respect and maybe popularity that it deserves. But we all gotta think, do we really want it to be that popular? sure, a 50/50 ratio would be awesome, but trance becoming mainstream is really something to think about...

But anyway, I'll stop rambling on now.

For the females on this forum, and the friends I'm sure many of us have who like trance but are also female, I salute you! Us guys really do cherish every trance girl we can find, if only there were more of them out there

cause it's 'cool' for guys to listen to electronic music, while for girls it isn't. girls care more for being accepted by other people, and listening to what most of the people listens to (mtv) makes them 'cool' and allows them to be integrated more in the society. and yeah, there's the vocal factor, almost all girls will like only catchy vocals with catchy lyrics. and almost all the girls you see on the parties don't care much for the music, just for partying out itself. while guys rather explore the music and study it carefully, girls prefer spending time with other stuff, not think too much about the music, rather thinking a lot about relationships for example. it's different ways of thinking, and different values on the society.

If you look beyond DJs, there are a lot of girls working behind the scenes in dance music. Many of the DJ booking agencies are owned or run by women and there are a lot of female managers. There is also a strong female influence at the dance magazines and radio stations. Girls do have a presence, its just not as obvious.
