Everyone has their hobbies and as we all know hobbies are expensive. I always wanted to be a DJ and wanted to spin dance music on turntables. I decided that even if I don't ever get gigs at least it makes me happy. When I am spinning my music it's like I am in another world. Nothing else matters and and it makes me feel good because music is my life. If anything, at least you can say DJing is your hobby. Really, it can get you gigs if you get out there and make yourself noticed. But you really have to want it and don't expect too much at first. Get to know other DJ's in your area and at least talk with them once a week. Make sure they know you too. Then eventually if you still want to make some career out of it after hearing others experiences then hand them a demo and ask if they can listen to it and give advice. How I see it is, if it makes you happy and your not gonna worry about losing money in this investment then go for it. If you worry about how expensive it is going to be then don't start. Not only will it make you unhappy but you won't be able to get the music you want because it is expensive.

It all boils down to this:

Bedroom DJing is a hobby. Ask a model-builder, a card-collector, or a paint artist if its worth it and you will get the exact same response:

Of course it's worth it. Certainly one can make money from these and a multitude of other hobbies, but that income is most often secondary. Ask even those who are profiting from their hobby and they will probably say they'd do it for free. It is their passion.

We gladly spend oodles of money on our passion because of this.
