You think artists should make stuff for us for free because its art? Please, that's ridiculous, it takes time, effort, skill and money to make the stuff we steal, if I were an artist and I was trying to make a living, I'd be ticked with people stealing music that I spent time making! sure people like eminem can afford it, but what about smaller artists who are teetering on the verge of bankruptcy?

How long have we had to "buy" music in order to enjoy it? Only as long as we've had recordable media since you aren't even really buying the artist's work, you're buying the record company's pressing of it into a CD/Recor/tape/etc.

I'd much rather own sweet, sweet records with sleeves, or a CD with tracklists, credits, funny stories, atrwork, etc, but paying whatever small chunk of the $14.99 that goes to the artist, and the rest of it to the bloated record company is ridiculous.

Should Debeers give out diamonds because they have a monopoly on diamonds? of course not! You say these things, because you can steal and get away with it, no repricussions, no moral guilt, just one click! If you're unwilling to pay the 16$ for a cd, then don't buy it, simple as that,

If you could steal a cd directly from a store, and get away with it, would you not consider that stealing, its the same deal!

Well, you aren't even making any points, just bitchin.

Just to summarize for you, since you don't seem to get it.

The record company PAYS the artist (commissions them) to make the music so they can sell recorded versions of it. I'm not saying it's about " art = free" it's about the music has entered the public domian once the ALREADY PAID artist has created it.

Digital versions of the media weren't created by the record company, therefore i do not feel a need to pay for the mp3s I have. I pay a licensing fee via buying recordable media to create my own albums, which covers the artist.

I certainly wouldn't make a print of Ryan's artwork since he would not be payed for the hardcopy I would have since there is no way to reimburse him for it, something the record company's have already circumvented with their levies and taxes on cd-r and cd-rw etc.

They are just pissed that digital media is not their creation, and they missed the boat on it.

Alec and crazedcanuck, good debate! I can't decide who's winning! Slight advantage to Alec though, but I'm kinda biased in this issue. Based on one point: the majority, if not all, of music artists sign with a record company and make the music with the clear intention of collecting profits from their listeners. And rightly so, since they are making a living off of this. Therefore if you don't pay them to hear it (minus promotions) then it's stealing, since you are enjoying the hard work they put into it but not rewarding them for it. you can almost think of the music industry as one that offers a service of enjoyment, not a tangible product like a CD-R. listening to their music via CD is just a convenient way to have the music serviced to YOU, rather then you having to go to the service (ie. concerts and such). So the whole CD-R/recordable devices argument is invalid...

they make commissions off their sales and bonuses if they go platinum, silver etc... plus it will hurt their next record deal if they don't sell as many records as they should have! I think very few djs make much money on their recordings, in fact major record labels have shut down due to shit like this, remember Hooj Choons! No more! and there are many others!

pffft... another pointless debate.

Recording Industry wants more money, so they finally decide to legally prosecute the people sharing the music online, and come up with the reason that the 23% drop in sales since 1999 is mainly due to internet sharing of mp3s, which is total bullshit but so many people bite on it too. Now, if they actually paid those artists decent $$$ or were selling CDs that actually had more than 2 good songs on them (if that!), I wouldn't mind buying CDs... but as the things are I'm not spending my hard earned money on garbage, regardless of what majority of people here think of an artist or his albums.

I do own a few quality albums which I've DOWNLOADED from the net first and found them to be pure art & quality... but other than that, I don't feel like shelling out my $$$ for all the garbage recording industry and labels throw out there.

Now if you've got money to burn and throw away, all the power to you... but don't bring that stupid crap as in "you are ripping of artists, you are stealing, etc"... fack u! Just because you got fooled out of your money don't make us feel bad too.

Fine, but even if you feel that they are ripping people off and that they are a multinational conglomerate which is too rich, you can't say you're not stealing from them when you are, yes they may be too rich, and you can feel justified that you're doing your part to even things out, fine, do it, but you're still steaing bottom line
def:STEAL - the wrongful or willful taking of money or property (being mp3's) belonging to someone else with intent to deprive the owner of its use or benefit either temporarily or permanently. No particular type of movement or carrying away is required.

question: you steal a pair of jeans, object stolen, lend it to your friend to wear (girls sometimes do this!), she is still wearing stolen jeans, its not like they magically become unstolen now, just because you can easily replicate something doesn't mean its still not stolen! It doesn't feel like stealing because one download doesn't hurt anyone, but 80 gb of mp3's on 10 million pcs in canada for sure will hurt the industry!
listen I 'm not arguing for the industry, in fact I have 80 gb of mp3s, I'm just saying that we are stealing regardless! However, if anything file sharing has increased my spending on music since I've been introduced to it. As a dj, since dec last year, I've likely spent 3000$ on vinyl, and I buy alot more cd's than I used to.

Basically, the CRIA are saying that if I buy a CD, burn the tracks to my computer and then let people upload it from me (SHARING), then I'm doing something illegal? I'm sorry, but I just don't buy that.

When I have BOUGHT the CD myself, I should be able to do whatever I want with it, and that includes letting people borrow and copy it.

This all just boils down to greed. The industry isn't as bad off as they want you to believe.
