Ask him if you mix the record in yourself.

Last night we had a DJ competition and some guy was spinning and using the microphone in the worst possible way, to cover up his mistakes in transitions he would scream out loud the title of the song and even the remix name. There should be a top ten thing not to do while dj'ing under any circumstances.
Also we had a girl ask one of the dj's : "Can you play something European, I wanna dance my as off you know". DJ : "What do you wanna hear?" . Girl : " My Milkshake Is Better Than Yours." . A very European dance track indeed

Here in Iowa, people think that DJ's are people who just sit around at a CD player and play songs one by one. My school once wasted $100 on some "DJ" who just sat on his ass with a CD player. I would love so much to have turntables, a mixer, and all my favorite vinyls and rip the dance floor up with trance at the next school dance.

One thing that you should NEVER say and do to a DJ and his set: "What does this do... and this... and this? *craaaaank*"

If you are in a Top 40 club or a Hip Hop club then go knock yourself out and make some song request. It all sounds the same and as long as it's the same songs playing on the radio no one seems to care. The mentality that it is about pleasing the people and playing what they want to hear so go make a song request doesn't apply to trance clubs. If you are in a good club or listening to a good DJ spin you are going to hear good music and you should just appreciate it. Don't ask a DJ that is spinning trance for a song request. Most DJ's already have an idea of what they want their set to sound like and asking for a song might not mix in well with their set. Don't put the DJ on the spot. Most people ask for some stupid song and then the people in the club think the DJ intended to play the stupid track. More than once I was like "WTF was he thinking playing that". Some of my closest friends are DJ's and I see it happen to them all the time. I say let the DJ be the DJ. That's just my opinion.

Although I agree with a majority of your post, saying that top40 or hip-hop tracks all sound the same isn't the best way to establish credibility.

I am not trying to establish credibility. This is a forum. I didn't say the music sounds the same...I meant the DJ's sets do. Which is a fact. I listen to a variety of music, but I live in Tampa and there is NOT a trance scene here and it sucks. People would rather listen to Hip Hip and Top 40 and hear the same music over and over. They think the DJ's are great, but it is easy to please a crowd with music that they are accustomed to hearing. Of course there are clubs here that are dominated by breakbeat...but no trance.

I started listening to "techno" when I was in highschool back in the 80's when the sound was more underground. I really started listening to it and going out to the clubs back in 1991. The title "tranceaddict in training" doesn't mean that I have lived under a rock for the past 13 years. It means that I have been busy and haven't been posting on TA.

I made no mention of your posting status, and I interpreted your statement to mean "all top40 and hip-hop tracks sound the same" when in fact you were saying "all top40 and hip-hop DJ sets sound the same." Even then it's a universal statement, and not entierly fair to all of the DJs.

By the same count, I could say that all trance DJ sets sound the same, although it would be just as erroneous as your statement.
