I've heard more ing about ROTK winning than I ever heard for Titanic or Braveheart and any LOTR movie owns those two hands down.

Wha? Are you kidding me man? Dunno about Titanic, but Braveheart definetely shoots a big one in LOTR's face! How can you even compare?

because if you know anything about history, Braveheart is a poor excuse for a historical drama...I could write 5000 words on how it blantantly and unapologetically rewrote that period of British history....

As a film, it's enjoyable (and gleefully violent) but doesn't hold a candle to what millions of people consider the best story ever told.

^^ ya but lotr is also nothing at all like the book, there are major differences, its just not possible to turn things into a movie without losing some aspects, whether its real history or a fantasy novel

First of all, historical precision plays little role when Oscars are given. Second of all, there are hundreds of historical interpretations on any event. I can write a 5000 essay on how "blantantly and unapoogetically" you interpret British history!

Nothing like the book? Come on now....the story and feel of Tolkien was translated, for the most part, as well as it could have been. I doubt a director like Lucas (thank god his attempts to do LOTR in the 1980's were botched...he made Willow instead ) or Spielberg could have matched or done better than Jackson and they surely would have changed a lot of things.

Since I've never really expressed my views here on British history, I doubt you could do that.

Of course there are interpretations abound on any issue in history. But the fact is that in order to support an interpretation, you must have sufficient evidence. The changes to the history of Braveheart in the movie had no historical justification. Even as a teenager when it was released, I remember basically every historian/film critic saying Braveheart had no bearing on reality whatsoever. Every one of my professors (and my own readings) provide an absolute contradictory history to that seen in the film. I'll just mention a few...William Wallace was a murderer long before leading the rebellion, the first battle was called Sterling Bridge and fought over control of a bridge and largely ON a bridge. To suggest that Wallace fathered the heir to the English throne is ludicrous...Irish mercenaries did not fight with the Scottish...and the Scottish did not become an independant nation until 90 years after the events of 1284, which makes the closing dialogue ridiculous.

It's like movies such as U-571 or The Patriot...sickeningly historically flawed...but there are those who watch them and believe every word.

i must be hard to please because i could not stay awake during the lotr movie,, i havent botehred to see titanic,, i know i would pass out, thoguht matrix was boring as fuck, havent seen starwars. in lotr i recognize the art in it and you know its cool that people like it but, you know i am just not into fantasy stuff. it was i well done but, just not for me. i also think there should be two seperate award shows,, because they lump everything into one category, watching the oscars whenever you hear that lotr was nominated it won. i think that maybe they should just get one award for maybe best all round movie,, like it would be an ultra oscar or seomthing,, then the rest of the movies can be chosen fairly. watching an award show for lotr is fucking boring. i would have liked to see tim burton win something, and i think sofia copola should have won more too. this is my first time watching the oscars, i dont understand why people waste so much time on this! but i shouldnt talk because i just made this big long post.

Smitty...I agree with you...but just because a movie is historically flawed, doesn't make it "bad". The problem would be if the creators were insinuating that it was accurate. Same problem with a lot of films...look at Schindler's List. It's accuracy can be debated forever but what is undeniable is that TONS of people that saw it believe wholeheartedly that it IS how it happened. It's kind of sad that movies will "educate" the masses more than true research and discussion ever will...

I definitely agree LOTR owns Titanic and Braveheart...no question. I've have been happy to see Lost in Translation win though...or at least Bill Murray.
