Your philosophy is flawed. I, myself am a very thoughtful person. I love thinking about how the universe work and creating theories to support my ideas.(Or maybe I just like shrooming and getting stoned, you pick.) I believe there's a certain boundary that a planet has to be between a star and it's orbit in order to support life.

Like how our distance from the Sun enables our planet to have a life friendly enviroment. Some stars that emit more energy have a larger 'life-support' area where those planets can support life. It all depends upon the number of planets in the system, their distances from the star, what the kind of atmosphere those planets have and the enviroment hostility that can contain life(like if those planets haven't been hit by meteors, etc.) I believe life on mars was once possible, but too much cosmic interuption caused it's life support atmosphere to collapse and become what we know as mars today.

It really isn't based upon numbers or some god forsaken formula that is what creates life. It's pure science, luck, and evolution in all aspects.

Space may be infinite, the universe may as well. According to my theory(it may not be original theory, but I've came up with most of this purely by self-thought) If there's infinite amount of stars created, life can be created if it's with-in the boundaries of the stars 'life-support' emit area. Planets are created the same way stars are, but they solidate in form due to their lesser energy masses. You got to realize how the universe forms and what becomes of these Anomalies.

Holy crap dude, didn't you read the whole thread? It's not my philosphy, I took it straight out of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

And yeah I know they're making a movie out of it, that's why I'm reading it again

Ok, so let's start off with a few assumptions:

1) The universe is infinitely large
2) There are, for all intents and purposes, an infinite amount of planets within this universe
3) Because not all planets support life, then there must be a finite amount of planets with life in this universe.

If the above is true, then:

To find the amount of life in the universe:

1) Take the number of planets with life on them and divide by the number of planets without life (finite number over infinity)
2) Any number over a number with a power greater than its' own is, according to calculus, effectively 0.

From this we can see that life, as we know it, does not exist, and is merely a figment of an overly active imagination. On the same note, the same argument can be used to justify not taking out the garbage (for in fact, there is no garbage to take out).

Were you shrooming when you wrote this?

It is very interesting question...are we alone?

not quite.

we do not know that the universe is expanding for sure. it seems to be expanding but there is a debate whether it's slowing down, accelerating, or expanding at a constant rate. at any moment it can start collapsing back on itself.

and we don't really know what dark matter is either, if that's what you're talking about. we seem to know that it exists but that's as much detail about it as we can give.
