Alanzo the Event TR-6 is actually quite good. They arent that solid though and Event's customer relations are very very poor so if you do end up calling in the warranty, expect very little to happen. At least for a couple of months.

I still think you shouldn't skimp on monitors. Its one of the most important bits of your setup. I made a huge mistake buying a Virus B before monitors and whilst I will never sell it, I had a horrible time in the mixdown for about a year fixing stupid mistakes that should never have been made in the first place. In the end I focused more on sound design and consequently my mixing is fairly poor - about a year behind everything else. Definitely get this right first time.

Audition the ADAM A7. I know its a bit out of your price range. Quite a bit actually but I cannot think of anything sub £500. Its worth going the extra month without and saving a bit more to get the monitors you really want.

A couple others that were recommended to me in this price range:

fostex pm-1
alesis mk2 active
event tr6

anyone know anything about any of those?

I would go with the Event TR6's from the list you provided.. I actually picked up my new monitors last week (Alesis ProLinear 820DSP Active), and in the process listened to the TR8's, which were really good speaker, very clear sound. So the only difference I can assume is that the low end on the 6's won't be as deep.
