Have you ever seen the cockpit of a Top Fuel Dragster?? first off they use a semi-automatic transmission depending on the car sometimes it is pneumatic speed paddles mounted on the steering wheel. but they cant have the traditional stick shifter since there physically isnt enough room for it in the cockpit. as for the NHRA drag racers, they are not automatic either, some are manual and most are a semi-automatic slap stick shifter. which will have 5 or 6 levers mounted beside the drivers seat which he will bang down in sequence to up shift. They can shift much faster this way. Drag racing skill is more in the hand eye foot coordination and in the mechanical prowess. It is a completely different style of racing from F1 or rally circuits. where the rally and F1 circuits aim for the balance of power and efficiency and performace, the drag circuits rely shearly on pure horsepower and torque. they are two different skools of thought so it isnt really feasible to compare skill between the two areas. its like comparing a sprinter ot a marathon runner.....

Take a look at almost any car and you'll see that the auto tranny has significantly less horsepower/torque than the manual version. It's not how "they" have them set, it's how the auto manufactures make them. I think if they were able to have the automatics put out as much horsepower as the manuals they would do so. Also, most automatics do weigh more than manuals.

I'm amazed at the amount of stupid comments that have been made in this thread, especially about drag racing. Any of you even been to a professional drag race (NHRA)? Those cars (top fuel dragsters) are putting out 8,000 horsepower (more power than the first 8 rows of a NASCAR race). That fact alone is impressive enough.

the automatic's are heavier, dont have as much hp, and also have less options. ie: they dont have independent rear wheel suspension or 18" wheels like the manuals. the automatic is cheaper than the manual, which is the opposite of most cases. the reason why the more expensive tranny is in the cheaper car is because they cut alot of corners in the automatic to make it cheaper. whereas the 6 spd is tuned differently, better suspension, better brakes, etc etc

but for a female driving around town, it'd be a georgous car to have 6 spd or auto.

last i heard to make an uphill start is to put it into first and then slowly release the handbrake. that description may be crude so i apologize. i have a 323 bmw manual and everytime theres traffic i curse the day i got a stick. though its lots of fun when ure on nice windy roads and the sort or no traffic. the handling and turning in my opinion is superior to automatic which was also mentioned here. i think getting a manual has helped me become a much better driver since my alertness and coordination are elevated in addition to other things. i look back now and i see the improvements. in relation to your post, dont worry if its automatic, just having the option of borrowing the car should more than make up for it.
