I really don't know why am I defending him, after all he came from the rival club (he's portuguese, I'm portuguese, bla bla bla), but truth to be told, Sporting has a very good school of players, as they produced Quaresma (waiting to know if he stays at Barcelona), Cristiano Ronaldo (in Man Utd, swimming in money and sometimes making decent games) and Viana.

You're probably right. As far as I can remember there were big clubs sniffing around Viana at the time because of his euro young player award. Juventus were one of those interested, I think Valencia as well, and he was far more likely to go to them than us. I assume that's why we pushed the deal early and put up so much money.

In January he asked if he could go to Sporting Lisbon for the rest of the season and Bobby agreed. But at the last minute Bobby changed his mind because one of our midfielders picked up an injury (Bowyer iirc?). Many Newcastle fans (myself included) were angry at that because Viana was getting no chances at Newcastle and a loan spell could do him a lot of good. Bobby said he was keeping him in case of injuries, but Newcastle would need to lose three central midfielders before Viana would get a game and that didn't seem likely. In retrospect perhaps Bobby's decision was correct, because those three midfielders all fell injured in a week, and in stepped Viana.

I've watched Viana playing for Portugal under-21s and he has been impressive, I can see why the Portuguese like him. When we bought him it seemed like a very exciting signing, but I am beginning to lose hope on him. I don't think he has been given a fair chance at Newcastle, but I think he could have done better when he was played this season.

I was disappointed to see he'd been left out of the Portugal squad (although I half-expected it), because a good Euro 2004 might have raised his confidence, or on the other hand raise his market value...

that's what's actually happened.... they've played him out position for so long that people think he's a winger????

you mention games in which he's faltered, but none in which he shined. did you happen to see the home game vs. chelsea?? hugo played very well, and newcastle won the game without dyer & jenas (who bobby seems to think are almost infallible)

bobby is too loyal to his favorites and it's starting to show that todays game is passing him by.
we can certainly agree on one thing, the english game is not the best fit for hugo's game. here's hoping (for his sake) that he plays elsewhere next season.

No Newcastle fans have ever seen him as a winger, many of us have grown restless of Bobby's favouritism and playing centre mids as wingers (Viana and Bowyer espescially). Bobby wholly deserves his fine reputation but he is not above criticism and certainly not above the club, and he is regularly criticised for the above.

Viana has finally been given his chance in centre-mid this season and he has struggled. His ability lies in his reading of the game, spraying passes around the park and intelligent through balls to the strikers, as well as a decent efforts on goal. But this season his passing has been shoddy and he seems to require far too much time on the ball for a centre mid in the Premiership. The Chelsea game was a great team effort and Viana had a decent game. Unfortunately he was poor against Man City (to be fair the whole team were), consistently gave the ball away in the first leg against Marseille and less said about his second leg performance the better.

I would say, like Jenas, he has gone backwards this season. Perhaps it's a dip in form, young players have them. I'm willing to give him another season but it really will be a make or break year for his career. One thing that does anger Newcastle fans is his apparent apathy when given the chance to play which he so desperately begs for in press interviews. Marseille was a massive game for him and his club, a good display in Europe would have seriously helped his Euro 04 ambitions, let alone the fact he was playing for the chance to be in a European final. He seemed half asleep for most of the game and when Bowyer replaced him midway through the second half you could see the difference, here was a player with fire in his belly, keen to make an impact, relishing it.

Bowyer is a good example because, like Viana, he too is a centre mid whose few chances came on the wing. The difference is Bowyer didn't complain, he got on with it. Bowyer was subject to far harsher criticism than Viana ever has been before he even kicked a ball for Newcastle. He, like Viana, has had limited opportunities in a season blighted by injuries. His performances on the wing have been similar to Viana, he's either cut inside too often or disappeared for much of the game. But unlike Viana, when he got his chances in centre mid he made an immediate impact. He has finally won over the sceptical fans with some excellent late season performances, coming back and scoring two goals in two games before setting up Ameobi's goal against Liverpool with an excellent through ball. Three chances, three top-notch performances. Not only that, but he has got back and defended for the cause, emerging as a box to box player who can score, provide, and defend. Now people are beginning to consider him as a regular centre mid next season. Viana has never showed that kind of determination to break his way into the side, and that is what is pissing people off.

Ian, I dunno about you but I love Sky's coverage of La Liga, Gerry Armstrong's quality, he works with 2 other commentators and they are all brilliant at commentating, very underrated, spanish football is class, so skillful! that Real Sociedad game was awesome... Sociedad have an amazing bunch of players, shame they underperformed this year
