Okie dokie my two cents. Let's compare music to putty because in reality, its just sonic clay. Now, let's say each style of music has its own style or watvever, its own particular molding in the clay. I think the problem that "elitist" (I don't really like the term, i kinda enjoy being an elite sometimes) have is that they vigorously protect one molding of the clay and abhor another, just because , or because two many people do it, so its "mainstream" . Now to shun something just because is idiocy. It can be likened to racism and we've all pretty much been taught there are things to be learned from different points of view etc... The mainstream issue is I think pretty bunk also. For one, mainstream designates a common and gives people precedent to stray from. Without "mainstream", "underground" wouldnt exist as we know it, various genres would not have been celebrated because they would not have been special. Also, just because its mainstream doesn't necessarily make it bad. There are many artist who make regular appearances on MTV that really have musical talent and the ones who don't usually don't stay very long (with a few exceptions). And in the end, we all fall into the mainstream category in one way or another so it really doesnt matter. Everything is relative, music being no exception, so really we should just learn to open our minds. Nothing's worse than a closed ignorant mind.

i dont know if has anything to really do with mainstream. I know when i listen to a track, i either like it or hate it. I can't force my self to like underground stuff, or hate mainstream stuff, its just natural. But over time your ear is going to change.

to me this seems to be a question of trying to establish a balance between two sides: one is being close minded and blindly not letting yourself listen to soemthing more than once, even if you dont like it the first time in the case that after a while you may realize that you actually like the song...but another side is to listen to something so many times that you trick yourself into liking it out of conditioning. some friends of mine outwardly reject something new just becusae they dislike the artist, others will listen to a new cd over and over again, even if they dont like it deep down inside but still keep listening, hoping that they eventually do becuase the artist is supposedly popular, or becuase they used to like the artist.

its hard to allow ones self to get acclimated to something new but not get so blindly open to things and start liking things becuase its another trend

i tend to agree with caleb... everything deserves some merit. if i dont like soemthing i know its just my personal opinion but i wouldnt dislike someone else or soemthing else just becuase i dont find it personally appealing.
