"what a pathetic moneygrabbing fucking shithead"

This is some BIG nonsense!! If he would stay with epic/uplifting trance THEN he would be the "moneygrabbing fucking shithead". Coz THAT is the commercial music and THAT is the music people can easily earn a lot money with!!! By stepping over to progressive in 2000 he showed that he cared for the music, that he cared for the vibe. True electronical music isn't meant to be commercial and mainstream! So he followed his heart and not his wallet by stepping over to progressive!

sorry jukx - that is utter crap what u just wrote!!

No-one just suddenly changes there tastes overnight - people gradually learn to love things, like we have to gradually love progressive hmmm.......

Isnt it strange how Seb who "followed his heart" as u put it, now has his own radio 1 show?? lol - of course, he's earning a lot less money with his show than before - yeah right!!

Unfortunately there is a lot of people in the industry who are like that

Renegade - you make some interesting points, and I totally understand where you're coming from - I can appreciate the work thats gone into prog tunes, but i dont think it will ever get xtremely big, because it is not that memorable :-

now, the prog tunes you cite as examples of the wide spectrum of the genre... well, firstly Accadia - Into The Dawn is a tune I purchased, mainly because i think its a wicked trance tune! Gorgeous melody, haunting strings, really nice - I wouldn't really class it as prog, kinda influenced, but the main point is it has a really nice melody

to be honest, i wouldnt leave it on the shelf if it was prog - i liked it so i bought it doesnt matter to me what percieved genre tunes fall into , if i like them, then i like them! but generally, its only melodic trance that interests me

also, sasha - xpander - ok sasha is pretty much a prog dj now, but that tune was out at a time when he was playing music i really liked - not really obvious trance, but sweet crisp clean trance, very nice stuff Unfortunately, IMO, he seems to have lost the melodies now anyway - xpander is a fucking brilliant tune, i could listen to that for hours, - its very detailed, theres a lot going on it, really clever - I really appreciate the work thats gone into that! But, just because Sasha mr prog made it, it doesnt mean its prog! Ok - if it IS, i still love it, but to me it is a beautiful melodic tune, very inspiring, and very intricate Xpander is an excellent melodic trancer!

if sasha made more tunes like that, i would be in awe of him, but i dont think he will ..

Well maybe you're right... I don't know Seb Fontaine, I'm not following the trance-scene anymore.
I was just stating that when you leave epic/uplifting trance behind you and you choose for a style less mainstream, you don't do it for the money!! You do it for the music, cause epic/uplifting is the style you can earn a lot money with these days!!!
correct me if I'm wrong...

For THEM, it was nothing more than some synth-lines and breakdowns, maybe a little catchy but that's it. (That's why you see them refer to epic/uplifting with these exact cliches, synths and drum rolls.) But for ME, and many others, it was much more. It was emotional music.

I for one HAVE experienced the uniqueness, beauty, emotionality and magnificent power of epic/uplifting. Maybe I've heard some anthems that you haven't. That's why I'm extremely upset.

I get what you're saying but it annoys me that whenever somebody expresses concern about the state of Trance, everything suddenly turns into an "I-love-Trance-more-than-you-do" competition. The fact of the matter is, if we didn't love Trance and didn't care about the genre then none of us would be here in the first place.

The other fact of the matter is that a lot of DJ's are turning away from epic/uplifting trance and trying out other forms, and that's what this discussion was about. It's hard to accept, but DJ's aren't put on the face of the earth to make us happy and they don't have any duty to do so. It's a job they love doing, and no matter how much you enjoy your work if you're doing the same thing for 5 years you're going to want a bit of a change.

I don't see the point of pretending everything's rosey - which it obviously isn't otherwise we wouldn't be having this discussion.

that is a very good point, seb fontain is an example, and before he was playing trnace, and when he changed, maybe he did see the change to progression, or maybe he was chenging to liking that music, i bet he didnt suddenly just stop playing trance, is was gradual, and to b honest, he has now got a job at radio1.

In my opinion is one of the biggest progressive house djs at the mo, and is converting a lot of people, shown by his set at creamfields, with a lot of people saying that they were impressed with his set.

In my opinion he has vision, and saw that progressive music was going to get big, and wanted a change. If he is still playing in 5 years time, who knows what he will b playing.

Another example is picotto he is gradually changing to a more techno side (imo), and fergie is comming from the hard house stuff to more hard trance.

I think they have a right to change, and i think they enjoy pleasing the crowd, but the money is a big aspect as well

I guess the difference between epic and progressive is like the difference between orange juice and beer. Now I like orange juice, and I've liked it for a long time. It tastes sweet and is easy to get into. Beer on the other hand can taste a bit odd - a bit dry - when you first try it. But, as you become more accustomed to its taste, you enjoy it even more.

My sentiments exactly, Renegade. Well said indeed, epic sounds are predictable, the snares and breakdowns we've all heard before. One can easily remember an epic tune as well as that experience when he or she hears it. However, for progressive, it is not something that everyone gets it the first time. I hated progressive like 2 to 3 months back, bought Max Graham's Tranceport compilation and couldn't comprehend a rat's ass about what the whole hype about progressive was all about. Then I bought John Digweed's Global Underground (Los Angeles) and he blew me away. Don't get me wrong, I am an avid lover of epic/melodic trance and has a collection of close to 300 trance vinyls. One point I'll like to make is that trance is really dying out, it's a phase and a reality of life. There'll still be producers pumping trancers and remixes, but the essence of trance has remained so deep in our minds ( our brain does store info and sequences of riffs and snares) that is is so passe. A breather would be nice.
I am beginning to enjoy progressive tunes now as they give me a new experience each and everytime I listen to them. New sounds, unpredictable sequences and a soothing journey that last longer than most trance tunes. It wasn't easy for me to appreciate progressive and many I believe will never get it. Roll with the times ppl...how would you feel if Guns N Roses are still playing at your local stadiums? My 2 cents.

Renegade: Check out JSJ - Deep Love 9(11.5 Mix) releasing soon on Renaissance. A Must have!!

P/S Tiesto will still be Tiesto and I respect him for pumping new sounds, teasing us with his talent in producing....can't wait for October

To be a TranceAddict, you appreciate almost all forms of it's styles. By listening, by dancing, by expressing, by philosophy, by spiritual necessity.

Let not what you once or still love bring grips of discontent, but expand to grow and follow the life of trance, where ever it takes you.

Trance is a tidal wave, keeping riding it or fall off and be left behind..

because I'm poplocked in this God forsaken town, I go crazy every time I hear pretty much any electronic sound. I'm the only addict I personaly know, people come up to my car and tell me "turn that crap off" But I love it, I never get tired of it because I hear it so rarely. I don't really understand what all this pickiness is about and whats with everyone not liking trance, but then again, I dont listen to and play music for a living, and don't live near anyone who does a good job at it. As long as there is that beat and that electic sound, I'll be happy. The only things im really picky about in electronic music are really cheesy lyrics like in alice deejay or somethin that just make me feel stupid listining to it, and then theres that stuff thats more a bunch of noise then it is music, like the first global underground, as long as it doesen't sound like that, I dont care how electronic music changes.
