I've been playing "play money" and doing very well for myself. Was wondering if $50 is a good amount to start with playing the $0.50/$1.00 tables in real money?

It's a good start. Hey if you're playing there right now make sure you visit me. I'm currently playing in their Sunday night $25,000 tournament. Come and say hello.

Before you deposit real money make sure you PM me with your name and email address that you registered with so I can refer you to get your bonus. Deposit 50 and you'll get another 25 for 75 in total. That's good enough to start with to play .50/1.00.

Come say hello to me, I'm at table #6 of the $25,000 tourny right now.

Will do. Probably going to be late July before I start playing for cash. I need more practice. I'll get in touch, though.

First of all congrats to Trancewave, that's some pretty fat ass winnings. Perhaps you can become the next Johnny Chan or Howard Lederer.

Personally, while I am a poker fanatic and have admittedly never played poker online for money, I'm not one for online money play.

For me, it boils down to the fact that I'm not very comfortable playing a game, whch is based so much on body language and perceptions thereof in an arena where this is missing.

Our stakes are much lower than yours ($20 buy in) so just immagine that everything is 10X or 20X, I'm a poor college student.

I had pocket 8s. Kid is bettin hard preflop, so everyone else folds except me and him.

Flop comes 8, K, A. I knew he didn't have aces or kings, but he's betting hard so I put him on 2 pair. So I inflate the pot even more (by now its about $20).

Turn comes... 9
This ment little to me, I thought he had Aces and Kings, but really he had J 10, so he just hit his straight, and now he's betting HARD. Never the less I call him.

River... 9
So now we got 8 K A 9 9, the running 9's gave me a full house and I call all in (about $40 left), he calls and my 8's over 9's kick his ass. Thank God for running 9s.

Ummm, how could the guy w/ the J-10 get a straight when there wasn't a queen on board?

must've been 8JQ99
so he had 8910JQ when he hit the 9

Gotcha

I'll just assume that the flop was 8-K-Q (NOT an ace), giving the guy a straight 9 to the King on the river for the fact that I will forever damn that guy to being designated an idiot for calling an all-in on a (using the term very loosely) Bluff.

LOL, where'd you find this thread again? I totally understand what you mean by the lack of physical element in online play.

Anyways I posted another hand history below (JUST BECAUSE I KNOW YOU ALL LOVE THEM! ) which I played last night. It reaffirms my statement that some of the people who play online are absolutely insane. Try and follow this hand and you tell me if you can guess what these people are holding. There's no way that you'd be able to read these guys. LOL. I will give my analysis of the hand below for those that have trouble following the confusing transcript.

Ok, I was small blind on this hand and had to post $10 (small blind). Keep in mind that this is a 15/30 game but the game is so loose it's not even funny. I was dealt 56 suited and when it got around to me it was already raised 2 times to me. Now you should always fold your 56 here under normal circumstances, because I have to call 2 raises. However with the way the table is going and the amount of chips already in the pot (6 people call $45 = $270, I only had to put in another $30 for a chance at $270 not bad) I was also thinking I have a good chance since everyone else is obviously holding high cards (when I looked at the hand history my jaw just dropped).
So I called, 7 players in for $45 in a 15/30 game!!! crazy!

The flop comes and I've made the nut straight!! (the best possible hand at the moment - a straight 3 to 7). What to do, what to do?? since i was first to act. I thought about it for what seems like an eternity. I believe the correct play would be to bet out because I know that it would be raised after me and there's no chance people will be folding now. I kept thinking and thinking and finally decided to check because I didn't want to look 'suspicous'.

I looked over the hand history now and realize that I made the wrong play. I should've bet out and it would've been capped to me. By checking I had to call 3 bets cold and which may have scared away some people. (I lost 2 players) At the time there was a million things going off in my head pulling me in a million directions, and it no doubt gave away my intentions. With so much money in the pot the players sitting next to me would've definately called a bet since they have "over cards" and would've been sucked in by the raises. Oh well, I won't make the same mistake the next time i'm caught in this situation.

The turn drops an Ace. I still have the best possible hand with no chance of flush on the board (only two spades). I decided I have to bet out this time representing I hit my ace to conceal the fact I have a straight. I bet out and just as expected it was raised to me again. I reraised and just as I thought, the other two callers called. The pot was too big now for them to fold.

The river drops a nine of diamonds. Thank god! I still have the best possible hand. I bet out and everyone calls. I take in a $927 pot.

Looking at the hand history, the maniac that did all the raising had 34 suited and had hit 2 pairs on the flop. Another good buddy had 68 unsuited called 30 bucks before the flop! WTF?? and cold call any raises along the way to try and hit a 5 for his gut shot straight. The other guy had A6 suited whom caught when he hits his ace with a straight draw.

Eh, I just happend to be searching for poker and came upon this thread.

Once again, this probably isn't borne out in money play nearly as much but I, for one, have noticed there is WAY too much pre-flop betting and that really crazy things happend such that hands which you couldn't pay me to play in virtually all normal situations such as low connectors, asymetrically suited (i.e A-2, K-5 or something like that) or even low suited connectors are winning hands more times than not. It really gives players an incentive to play based upon the luck of the flop/turn/river and I feel that this doesn't reward people who make good, sound plays nearly enough.
